Join Narwhal in Torshavn, the principal town of the Faroe Islands brimming with its own brand of Norse culture. Torshavn is easily reached by transport links from the island’s airport in Vagur.
Following initial safety briefings, we will be heading out of port and set sail for the first time. The waters around Torshavn provide the perfect opportunity to get used to the boat and get a first glimpse of the local wildlife.
Once the conditions are right, just like the Vikings before us, we will set out on our crossing to Iceland. The crossing of around 250 miles will take us 2-3 days to complete. We will work in a watch system, taking it in turns to sail the boat through the day and night with the chance to experience the magic of sailing under a sky full of stars. During the crossing, you will have the chance to get as involved as you like in sailing as well as our ocean research projects such as microplastics sampling and wildlife surveying. There will be the opportunity to try your hand a navigating like a Viking using traditional techniques such as the sunstone and sun-board. We will make landfall in the east coast of Iceland which has a number of spectacular and sheltered fjords where we can more up, get some rest and celebrate making our Viking crossing.
Now we can slow the pace, with the chance to step ashore and spend time exploring, hiking, photographing and simply enjoying this magical world. We will work our way north along the coast, watching sea birds and dramatic coastlines and maybe even find our very own natural hot spring to take a swim in. These waters are known as the whale capital of Europe so we will have our eyes peeled for the magical experience of encountering a whale.
We will spend our final day enjoying the elemental scenery of Iceland before heading into port in Husavik. We will moor up for the night and enjoy our final evening on board with a nice dinner and time to swap stories, highlights and pictures from the expedition.
*The exact itinerary that we follow will be chosen each day by your skipper to make the best use of the weather conditions. Since we operate with just a small number of guests on board, we can tailor the areas that we explore based on your interests. All meals and hot/soft drinks and hire of a waterproof all in one are included in your ticket price.
