This short sailing trip is a great way to experience sailing a classic boat whilst getting the best views of the south Devon coastline.
Setting sail from Our Daddy’s home port of Dartmouth, this beautifully restored lugger will take you out to open water before letting the wind dictate which way you’ll head along the coast. Either way, it’s an amazing way of exploring Devon’s coastline. You’ll have plenty of chance to go ashore and discover much-loved seaside towns, as well as experience the coastline from the sea, offering a unique perspective of the county. Whether you’re a seasoned solo sailor or a group looking to do something a bit different with your weekend, Our Daddy’s crew will cater for all ages and abilities.
The crew are from the area, and have been sailing these waters for years – so they know the best places to anchor, the most beautiful areas to sail past and the prettiest towns to visit. Dartmouth in itself is a beautifully picturesque harbour town, so make sure you allow a little time before joining Our Daddy to wander through the narrow streets and discover what it’s got to offer. After heading out of the River Dart to the open sea, you will most likely head west down the Devon coast. This could see you sailing past Blackpool and on to Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley – the largest freshwater lake in the south-west (and bird spotters – bring your cameras!). Moor overnight at the pretty waterside town of Salcombe, bustling with friendly locals, traditional fishing vessels, cobbled streets and artisan shops.
If the wind requires Our Daddy to sail east up the coast, you could sail past one of Devon’s many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Berry Head. With porpoises and dolphins often playing in ships’ wake, make sure you’ve got your eyes peeled on the water as well as on the land for the native seabirds – guillemots, kittiwakes, kestrels and gulls. Past Berry Head, Our Daddy may stop at Brixham – home to the fabulous Pilgrim Of Brixham and a wealth of maritime history. Aside from Pilgrim, Brixham welcomes many other classic and traditional vessels to its harbour, and you can be transported back in time by the scene of wooden vessels moored in front of picture-perfect pastel fishermen’s cottages.
Skippers Steve and Tim pride themselves on the food served aboard Our Daddy, with a delicious selection of meals all included in the price. From croissants to cream teas, tapas boards and fresh bread, you won’t be going hungry after an exhilarating day sailing on this stunning historic lugger.
With beautiful anchorages, amazing food and wonderful sailing, this is a delightfully different way to spend a weekend.
