Douarnenez, France to Plymouth, UK

Nestled on the coast of Brittany, Douarnenez is a delightful fishing port with a truly authentic Breton atmosphere. Stroll through its quaint streets and enjoy the vibrant colours of the fishing boats in the harbour. Our route will depend entirely on the wind as we set sail from Douarnenez. We may need to make use of a weather window and aim to sail straight to cross the English Channel but hopefully, there may be some time to explore some of the Breton coast before we leave for Plymouth.

Douarnenez sits in the bay opposite the Crozon Peninsula, a beautiful region with some great sheltered anchorages. Before you cross the channel, perhaps stop at Camaret-sur-Mer, a quaint coastal village with a lovely blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Admire the panoramic views from the Vauban Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and soak in the peaceful ambience of its sandy beaches and rugged cliffs. Explore the charming streets adorned with traditional Breton houses and indulge in the delicious seafood specialities at one of the waterfront restaurants.

We’ll pass by the enchanted Ushant Islands, a jewel of the Atlantic Ocean. These remote and windswept islands, known as “Ouessant” in French, boast dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and an intriguing maritime history. Explore the charming village of Lampaul, with its traditional stone houses and picturesque harbour, where you can witness the daily rhythms of island life. Immerse yourself in the rich seafaring heritage of the Ushants as you visit the historic lighthouses that have guided countless ships through treacherous waters. 

As we bid farewell to the French shores, we venture into the vast expanse of the English Channel. Feel the excitement as the wind fills the sails, propelling Bessie Ellen towards the English coast. This leg will feature some night sailing and all guests will be asked to be part of the watch system as you journey back to the UK. Getting Involved

The crew actively encourage guests to get involved with all aspects of sailing on a traditional vessel – it is an all-hands-on-deck attitude. This all-hands-on-deck approach ensures an engaging and inclusive experience for everyone. Even if you have no prior sailing experience, the crew’s expertise and guidance will have you hoisting sails, taking the helm in open waters, mastering basic rope work, and even picking up some navigation skills. Guests will be expected to get involved with all aspects of sailing as well as night watches on rotation. Bessie Ellen welcomes adventurers of all backgrounds, provided they have a love for adventure and the natural world!

The other important crew member is ship dog Bracken! A small border terrier who is well-versed in life on board, loves watching for dolphins, exploring ashore and sleeping while under sail.

Sleeping and relaxation

Below decks, guests are indulged in a spacious saloon with original wooden beams, comfy open bunks and two toilet/wet rooms where you’d be forgiven for forgetting that you were even on a boat! Each bunk has a light, full bedding and a privacy curtain. A tiny galley sits tucked mid-ships and you will be in awe and wonder of the meals that come out of this space.

Nikki is not only a competent skipper but also an incredible cook using locally sourced produce everywhere possible.

Bessie Ellen has limited space for possessions so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. Each bunk is allocated a storage chest to store your items, but there is no storage for rigid cases so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those who have sailed before may have their preferences!

• Fingerless gloves for hoisting sails (sailing or cycling are best)
• Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
• Please consider waterproof sailing boots OR clean farmer’s wellies!
• Wash towel
• Flip-flops or crocs for wet room showering
• Swimsuit and swim towel (optional) 
• Lightweight, quick-dry clothes (base layers, fleece and synthetic tops are both lightweight and quick-drying!)

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea so please bring lots of layers even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

• Warm, windproof and waterproof coat and trousers. (There are some emergency oilskins but these are not permitted to be taken off the boat)
• Sun cream (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Sunglasses and a warm hat/cap
• Refillable water bottle
• Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
• Camera/binoculars 
• Personal wash kit (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Smidge’ midge repellent – only necessary when sailing in Scotland
• Each bunk berth has a privacy curtain so we advise sleep masks and/or earplugs!
• Charging cables for personal devices (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices)
• A good book to read!
• Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

• Are all meals included?

  Yes, all meals on board are included in the price. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Yes, please let us know at the time of enquiry.

• Are there any added extras?

  There's an honesty bar for soft drinks and alcohol.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  There are 12 comfortable berths in the former cargo hold. This is an open plan area that is also used for meals and relaxing. Each bunk has its own reading light and privacy curtain.

• Is there a porthole in my berth?

  There are portholes within the saloon for natural light but not in each berth.

• How many toilets/showers does she have?

  Bessie Ellen has two toilets/showers for guests.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All your bedding (duvet and pillow) is provided but please bring your own towels (washing and/or swimming).

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  No, Bessie does not have laundry facilities on board.

• Is there heating on board?

  Yes there is heating if needed!

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but are welcomed by the crew!

• What language is spoken on board?

  English.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from the modern tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan if needed.

• Can I charge my phone or camera?

  Yes. We run generators every day in the morning and evening, which run the 240 volt system of normal 3 pin sockets.

• What is the currency on board?

  GBP - Pounds Sterling.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Bessie Ellen is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up the boats step ladder over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are waterproofs available?

  No. Please bring your own. There are a few oilskins spare for emergencies only.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  Not at all. We give everyone who joins us on board the choice to do as much or as little as they like, whether the know how to or not.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  No.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are worried to take some medication 24 hours before travelling.

• Is there an age limit?

  No, but we advise over 16's for scheduled voyages as there is an open saloon sleeping arrangement. There is no limit for private charter.

Getting There 

Douarnenez

BY AIR

Fly into Brest Airport (BES) which is 3-4 hours on public transport from Douarnenez, via Quimper. There is a shuttle from the airport to the railway station where you can pick up connections to Quimper and then on to Douarnenez. 

Fly to Quimper if you would like additional nights to enjoy Brittany before and after your trip as British Airways flies to and from on a Tuesday and Saturday.

You can connect to Douarnenez from Paris. It is over five hours by train or you can fly from Paris to Quimper and pick up connections from there.

Getting Home 

Plymouth, Sutton Harbour

BY RAIL

Plymouth is the closest train stop on the South West mainline. There are direct trains with Great Western Railway to Plymouth from Penzance, Exeter St Davids, Cardiff Central and London Paddington, and Edinburgh with CrossCountry trains (select The South West to Birmingham, Manchester, the North East and Scotland).

The quickest route then to/from the Marina is a 5-10 minute taxi ride.
