YOUR SAILING AREA

Spain & Portugal

La Coruña town’s history is closely connected with its historic fishing and trading port, and the peninsula on which the historic part of town is situated is home to an interesting Romanesque road network with squares and medieval churches as well as the Hercules Tower, the oldest lighthouse in the world. The Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Goya and others on display, is also worth a visit.

From La Coruna in the north,  Blue Clipper will cruise along the spectacular coastline of Portugal. The sailing will mostly be made by day, however, there may be an opportunity for an overnight sail down the coast. As you make your way down, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore stunning locations such as Muros. A seafront town lined with ancient granite-paved streets, traditional Spanish markets and bustling taverns.

Exactly where you will stop will depend on the weather and wind. Sail and explore the beautiful Iles Cies situated in the mouth of the River Vigo and now a designated National Park teeming with birdlife. Anchor in its picturesque sheltered coves and swim in its glistening clear waters to the stretches of sandy white beaches. Follow the walking trails as they meander higher amongst the tree before reaching Mount Faro – a fabulous point offering spectacular panoramic views.

Visit the bustling cities of Porto lined colourful merchant houses along narrow cobbled streets and the capital of Lisbon with its ancient history and maritime heritage.  The final harbour of Portimao is traditionally known for its shipbuilding and sardine fishing. With easy access out of Portugal, Portimao is the second largest city in the Algarve region.

Blue Clipper

Guest berths: 12 Rig: Gaff Schooner

Built-in Sweden in 1991, tall ship Blue Clipper is an impressive three-masted gaff rig schooner. With a clipper bow, original teak deck and elegant stern, she mixes a traditional tall ship feel with a relatively modern build giving guests an authentic experience with all the mod cons.

She has spent many years sailing all over the world from the Caribbean to the Arctic and is a frequent participant in the European Tall Ship regattas. Originally owned by the Brandy company Hennessy and named ‘Spirit of Hennessey, she appeared in many TV programmes and commercials before being privately bought in the late 90’s.

On deck, she boasts ample space for her guests to become fully immersed in hands-on sailing; heaving the ropes, hoisting the sails, learning ropes skills and even taking the helm. She has 3 kayaks and 3 paddle-boards for guest use while on anchor so you can explore even further inshore.

A spacious saloon, wheelhouse and galley also sit at deck level while below decks has been well-considered with six ensuite cabins a family cabin that sleeps six. All cabins have a porthole for natural light and heating/air conditioning.
