Sail with Pilot Cutter Polly Agatha across the English Channel from Portland on the Jurassic Coast to Guernsey in the Channel Islands ready for the 75th anniversary of Guernsey’s Liberation, commemorating the Islands’ freedom from German Occupation during World War II.
As you leave Portland, look out for Portland Bill Lighthouse on the horizon. This marks the beginning of your journey and as you sail away, get the binoculars out to soak up the dramatic white cliff lines of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
Leaving Portland behind, you will sail across the English Channel and Polly is the perfect boat to make such a crossing. Originally made to cross the Bristol Channel to transport goods, Pilot Cutters are designed to take their crews out into the wildest seas and keep them safe and as comfortable as possible. Polly will obviously aim to cross the Channel in the best conditions possible but it’s good to know you’re in safe hands!
Stop off on the island of Alderney, the third-largest Channel island known for its rich and varied wildlife and home to the largest population of Glanville Fritillary butterflies in the British Isles, the rare blonde hedgehog, huge colonies of northern gannets and puffins nesting offshore. Colour washed houses, cobbled streets and welcoming restaurants make up the sweet main town of St Anne’s, known for its good hospitality.
Aim to reach in Guernsey’s capital of St Peter’s Port on Friday ready for the weekend of celebrations. This sweet waterside town has been voted as one of Europes prettiest harbours and has even won the RHS Britain in Bloom award – not surprisingly the island is well known for its flower growing. Why not take a few days to explore Guernsey? With over 27 sandy beaches, gentle rolling hills and an abundance of history, this island has lots to offer! Read more about the Channel Islands here.
Saturday and Sunday will see Polly Agatha moored in the harbour where she will act as your base for the weekend. Free to explore the island and join in the with anniversary celebrations, this harbour town really comes to life. From liberation parades, marching bands and parachute displays to Torpedo ship visits and beautiful firework displays – there will be something to entertain around every corner!
All meals and hot/soft drinks except the duration of Saturday are included in your ticket price.
