Participate as crew on a proper Cornish Privateer Lugger in the annual Falmouth Classics & Sea Shanty Festival
On this sail you have the opportunity to take part in the great Falmouth Classics Regatta in the best possible way. You will sail as part of the crew on Grayhound and not only get the excitement of the race, joy of the parade of sails but also be able to see all the beautiful classic ships up close at sea. As crew you will be fully immersed in the handling and navigation of Grayhound. You need no prior sailing experience but be in good health. The professional crew will guide and teach you all the way.
We will embark from the historic coastal town of Penzance just west of Falmouth. On our day sail to Falmouth we will trim the crew together while enjoying beauty of the Cornish coast. It will be an epic sail into the Falmouth harbour as we tack between all the other traditional ships and classic yacht and drop anchor. We might fire a cannon or two to make sure no one misses our entrance. Then follows some exciting days of Regatta racing and Parade of Sails. For the full itenirary and sailing program please visit Falmouth Classics.
After long days of sailing and parading we can enjoy the Sea Shanty Festival with music on street corners, pubs and venues all over town. With more than 60 musical groups music from all over the world the nights might be long…A rum or two might just go down the ‘hatch’! for.
Please visit Falmouth Sea Shanty for the weekends’ full itinerary. As sailing crew you will be invited to events and entertainment ashore. There will be plenty of chances to visit other beautiful ships and make many new friends.
Grayhound
Guest berths: 12 Rig: Lugger
Grayhound is a three-masted, wooden tall ship Lugger who was first launched in 2012. She is a a 5/6th scale replica of the original “Grayhound” who was built in Cornwall in 1776 and used as a Customs Lugger. Under new ownership, she nows resides primarily in Douarnenez, France but certainly still loves to explore the seven seas.
True to her original ancestors, Grayhound has been traditionally built with her rigging the same as you’d find it back in 1776. Her owners relish the opportunity to give guests a true and exhilarating sailing experience, taking them back in time for a truly fascinating sailing holiday adventure. Sailing with Grayhound is a hands-on experience and guests are invited to get involved with all aspects of sailing this unique 18th century style Lugger.
Below decks, the traditional fit out continues but with considered spaces and a few more mod-cons. A communal saloon area sleeps 5 guests with a further five berths available in the fore cabin. A generous galley, two heads and a shower ensure guests comfort after a good days sailing.
