Eye of the Wind will welcome you aboard in Holtenau, situated on the western shore of the Kiel Fjord. After a welcome drink and dinner in the deck lounge, you will have the opportunity to observe the lively coming and going at the locks of the Kiel Canal. From small sports yachts to ocean liners, vessels of all kinds and sizes can be seen passing by around the clock on the world’s busiest artificial waterway. On the walk to the small Holtenau lighthouse, you will get a taste of the nostalgic harbour atmosphere – numerous old cargo ships and schooners are often anchored on the quay at dusk.

Life at Sea

This trip is a great way to get a taste of seafaring adventure: at this time of the year, only low waves and moderate wind speeds are to be expected in the area of the Western Baltic Sea. Think plenty of fresh sea air, on-board comfort, delicious food from the excellent onboard kitchen mixed with genuine, traditional seamanship. Sail from Kiel to discover the Danish Archipelago before finishing in the German port town of Flensburg.

Setting the Sails

As with all our sailing holidays, the exact route and harbour stops won’t be known until you board and will entirely depend on the weather forecast for that week. After receiving safety instructions as you board and an introduction to sailing with Eye of the Wind from the ship’s crew, you will soon be able to take part in sailing yourself. Eye of the Wind have a fully experienced and professional crew onboard so taking part in the physical aspect of sailing with Eye of the Wind is not mandatory but is certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity!

After breakfast, it will be time to set the sails towards the eastern shore of the fjord, where will see Laboe’s naval memorial. After a day’s sailing, we will cross the invisible German-Danish maritime border and find ourselves in the sheltering harbour of Sønderborg, on the island of Als, which will be our anchorage for the night. A major attraction is the castle, with its gardens, within clear sight of our anchorage. Take a walk along the harbour with the historic merchant’s houses and a stroll through the Old Town with its typical Danish tranquillity.

The Baltic Coast

Known for its good sailing and trade routes, the winds across the Baltic remain fairly stable in the summer months providing great conditions for a full set of sails. The Baltic coast along Germany is by far the most sheltered and sailing here provides the perfect opportunity to experience the very best of this coastline. With a multitude of traditional German harbour towns, Eye of the Wind is not short of choices to stop overnight and gives guests a chance to explore ashore. Pass the busy shipping lanes of the Kiel Canal and perhaps stop overnight nearby to watch a plethora of ships and yachts pass through towards Scandinavia.

This coastline also neighbours with the Danish islands of Langeland, Lolland and Ærø which could also be possible stops for Eye of the Wind.

You can join the crew at any number of the large maritime festivals they appear at, cruise the European coast, or relish some winter sun and climb aboard for their voyages in the Caribbean. The transatlantic crossing back from the Caribbean to Portugal is an experience worth cherishing.

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. • Are all meals included?

  Yes. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, hot and soft drinks are included in your ticket price.

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Yes, please let us know when making your booking.

• Are there any added extras?

  There's an honesty bar for alcohol.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  There are 6 twin bunk, ensuite cabins.

• Is there a porthole in my cabin?

  Yes, there are ventilation hatches.

• How many toilet/showers does she have?

  Eye of the Wind has an ensuite shower and toilet in each cabin.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All bedding and a towel is included but please bring your own swim towels (if needed). Micro-fibres are a great lightweight, quick-drying alternative.

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, we would prefer you let your hair dry naturally in the sea breeze!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  No, Eye of the Wind does not laundry on board.

• What language is spoken on board?

  English and German

• Is there heating/air conditioning?

  Yes, Eye of the Wind has air con/heating in each cabin.

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but are welcomed by the crew!

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from the modern tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan.

• Can I charge my phone/camera?

  Yes, there are European 230 volt power outlets in each cabin so please bring an adaptor.

• What is the currency on board?

  It will be the local currency depending on the voyage destination.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Eye of the Wind is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up the boats step ladder over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are Waterproofs provided?

  No, please bring your own.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  Not at all. We give everyone who joins us on board the choice to do as much or as little as they like.

• Does the boat have any water toys/fishing lines?

  There is fishing gear on board, which is usually used by our chefs. If interested, this can certainly be used in consultation with the cook on board.

• Will I be seasick?

  Everyone reacts differently but if you are unsure, we recommend taking tablets up to 24 hours travelling.

• Is there an age limit?

  No! Please double check for under 8's.
