Sail with modern yacht Cherokee from Tenerife to explore the Canary Islands and La Gomera.
Life at Sea
No experience is needed to climb aboard – just a lust for adventure! Get involved with hoisting the sails, taking the helm and some basic navigation along the way. Cherokee is a modern yacht so she is much easier to sail than some of our “hands on” tall ships meaning there is plenty of opportunity to sit back and enjoy the views.
Sailing in the Canary Islands
With a constant North Easterly wind and with the spring-like temperature this time of year, perfect sailing conditions are ensured at the Canary Islands.
Set the sails to the island of La Gomera. Depending on the wind, your first destination is likely to be the charming town of San Sebastian, where we will stay a day for an excursion inland.
In the middle of the island lies the “Parque Nacional de Garajonay”, with one of the oldest forests in the world. Due to the enormous heather trees, laurel trees and deep ravines (baranco’s), this forest is unlike any other forest in Europe and because of its height you also have a beautiful view of the almost magical cloud blanket that keeps nature so beautifully green.Â
Sail further to “Valle Gran Rey”. A fishing harbour with impressive red cliffs where narrow alleys in the village lead to bars with tapas and a beautiful view over the ocean, the perfect place for a sunset.Â
Cross over the water to El Hierro. This beautiful island is far from the tourist route with fascinating black lava sand beaches. Spend a day exploring this sweet island with a visit to “Mirador de la pena”, hidden in the rocks with a breathtaking view over “El Golfo”.
Cherokee
Guest berths: 8 Rig: Cutter
In 2008, Jouke Lemmer purchased Cherokee after spending years sailing with his father’s ship amongst others. Cherokee was built in 2000 by award-winning boat builders J & J Design and a year after buying her, Jouke refitted Cherokee radically, transforming her into a truly comfortable charter vessel, giving her a cutter rig and space for a generator so as to offer his passengers power and hot showers!
She is a fast, 16m vessel with a stunning teak deck and spacious cockpit, and she operates with two crew members (her skipper and the bosun/chef). Cherokee is exceptionally good at what she was built to do – pure sailing. Read more about what to expect with life onboard here.
Jouke sails his ship all over the northern hemisphere, leaving Cherokee’s home port of Rotterdam in May and sailing anywhere from the Hebrides and the Channel Islands, the Faroe Islands and Ireland or even down to the North coast of Spain before making the journey back to Holland in October. Join him and his wonderful ship for the adventure of a lifetime – think exhilarating sailing, bucket list destinations and top-notch hospitality.
