Your sailing holiday will begin in the bustling port town of Harstad and will lead you through the beautiful Norwegian fjords to the whales at Andenes and the unspoilt towns of Senja. The island of Senja is loved for its distinctive dramatic mountain peaks, picturesque towns and pristine beaches that can best be seen in all their glory from a ship on the water.
Tucked just below the Northern Light Oval, this area of Norway is one of the best places in the world to witness this spectacular natural wonder.
Sailing with tall ship Noorderlicht is perfect for solo travellers, couples and families alike with sailing in this fascinating part of the world certainly leaving life-long memories. Noorderlicht is fully crewed but guests are welcomed to get actively involved with sailing.
Below is a rough day-to-day guide of what to expect based on previous voyages but please bear in mind that all itineraries are subject to the weather. As you board, the Captain will have a better idea with updated forecasts of what you can expect from your adventure sailing holiday in Norway.
Day 1: Harstad: gateway to whale watching at Andenes
Arrive above the Arctic circle into the sweet Norwegian town of Harstad. A great starting point for a sailing holiday exploring the beautiful Lofoten Islands. Noorderlicht awaits you in the harbour of Harstad, where you can embark from 16:00. After a welcome from the crew and a delicious 3-course dinner, there is time in the evening to explore the town of Harstad.
Day 2: The Northern Lights and sailing towards Skrolsvik
Set the sails toward the southernmost tip of the island of Senja. With beautiful scenery, the town of Skrolsvik was once a thriving fishing village and with little light pollution, it gives a perfect location for observing the Northern lights in the evening.
Day 3: Looking for whales around Andenes, the ‘whale capital’ of Norway
Set course towards the ‘’Bleik-canyon’’ for some ultimate whale spotting opportunities. This extraordinary deep-sea area offers the possibility to observe a variety of whales in their natural habitat. Once you have passed the canyon, Noorderlicht will sail for the fishing village Andenes to anchor for the evening.
The scenery of this little town is dominated by the Andenes lighthouse, a 40 meters high lighthouse that dates back to 1859 and is still in use today.
Day 4-6: Exploring the spectacular landscape of Senja
Spend the next few days continuing your exploration of the coast of Senja. Also referred to as “Norway in miniature’’ or “fairytale island’’, Senja is loved for its dramatic mountains that plunge straight into the sea, its rich wildlife and low light pollution which can offer the best aurora experience. Noorderlicht will moor off some picturesque fishing villages such as Gryllefjorden or Hamn where you can explore the scenic landscape ashore.
One afternoon Noorderlicht might moor at Husøy (the house island), a uniquely situated island that is connected to the surrounding land by a 300-meter long pier. Everything is close by on this small island: the local supermarket, the fishing industry, the school, the cafe.
Day 6: Undiscovered gem of Norway: Sommarøy
Set sail to the island Sommarøy, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. With its pearly white beaches and azure blue sea surrounded by high mountains, Sommarøy is a popular sailing holiday destination in Northern Norway. Here, we can take a beautiful walk up to the 211-metre high summit of Hillesøya, from where you have a panoramic view of the island and the rugged Norwegian coastline.
Day 7: Sailing back to Tromsø
Upon arrival in the Arctic town, enjoy some free time to buy the final souvenirs or simply take a walk to soak up all the impressions of the week. If you have the opportunity, it is an absolute must to visit the Arctic Cathedral or ride the iconic Fjellheisen cable car to the mountain Floya. Here you have a fantastic panoramic view of the Arctic town. You are expected back on board around dinner time, where the crew has a last surprise in store for you. The rest of the evening you can enjoy your last night with the crew and your fellow travellers.
Day 8: Goodbye Noorderlicht!
After a hearty breakfast, you can disembark by 09:00. In Tromsø you can take the flybus directly to the international airport.
