A day to day guide

D A Y  1

Start your Indonesian adventure with a tour of Ternate’s historical highlights before boarding our Ombak Putih, meeting the crew and settling into your new home for the next few weeks. 

On setting sail, we will pass the island of Tidore, a perfect volcanic cone rising from the tropical seas before enjoying lunch on board, where will also have a magnificent view of the extinct Kiematabu volcano that dominates the island. The slopes feature plantations of graceful clove trees which were once unique to the island. They were deemed so valuable in world trade that European nations fought for centuries to monopolise them. 

D A Y  2

Today we visit the breathtakingly beautiful Guarici Archipelago, a chain of islands with white sandy beaches, vibrant coral reefs and some lovely local villages. We will spend a full day here snorkelling and swimming before visiting one of the villages to meet the local people.

This group of islands are part of a government-controlled conservation area, designed to protect the reefs and the many rare and beautiful marine species that live here. Tranquil and protected, these waters are the perfect location for any beginner or rusty snorkellers, providing perfect conditions to become familiar with the water and to hone skills for the coming days. 

D A Y  3

Today sees us search for some very special species of butterfly, birds and quirky mammals. 

Setting off to explore deep into the forest of Bacan island, follow in the footsteps of English naturalist Alfred Wallace for it is here that he first saw what he called “the most beautiful butterfly in the world”, the Golden Birdwing. During our trek, there are numerous other species we might see including the cuscus, the black-crested macaque and some hornbills.  After lunch back on board, we will spend the afternoon snorkelling and swimming on the nearby reef. 

D A Y  4

We will spend today exploring the islands and local habitats of Balang Belang Island, which offers fantastic reef and mangrove snorkelling. The latter serves as a nursery to many marine species, including baby sharks and school fish.

From here we will then explore the huge inland lagoon from the boats tender. Home to healthy populations of parrots, tree swift and imperial pigeons to name but a few, it will be an afternoon packed with bird spotting.

D A Y  5

We dial up the cultural experiences today with a war dance performed in our honour. Stepping ashore on Taliabu island, we will be treated to a traditional dance known as the ‘cakalele’, by local warriors. We will then have a chance to explore the local village and meet the people of this remote isle. 

In the afternoon, enjoy some incredible snorkelling on a reef teeming with colourful fish and possibly some kayaking and paddle-boarding for those who are keen. 

D A Y  6

Our sixth day sees us uncover the Bokan islands, an area of unsurpassed beauty. We will enjoy plenty of marine exploration and relaxation as we snorkel, swim, paddle around the glorious reef, beach and island with giant clams scattered around the area.  

There will also be the rare privilege to swim in a small marine lake filled with stingless jellyfish, the exotically named Danau Piasu Botangan, one of only 20 lakes of its kind in the world.

D A Y  7

A trio of fabulous experiences await us today involving culture, conservation and wildlife. 

We being with a visit to the bustling Indonesian island port town of Banggai, a hive of activity and commerce. Wander the local market, explore the colourful neighbourhoods, experience the sultan’s palace and the maleo bird egg museum. Adding to this is the chance to take it all in from our fleet of brightly-coloured motor rickshaws, which will be waiting on the dock on our arrival. 

After, we pay a hands-on visit to LINI, an NGO doing vital work with coral restoration on the surrounding reefs. In addition to working with local fishermen in finding sustainable solutions for overseas markets and the live aquarium fishing trade. 

The last of the day’s highlights will be a snorkel on a local reef where we will see the most elegant, but very threatened, Banggai Cardinal Fish – a darling of saltwater aquarium lovers worldwide. 

D A Y  8

Today there is the chance to discover the Bajau sea gypsies of Southeast Asia. This community of people have a very unique way of life, living in complete harmony with the water. 

On arrival at their home, we will snorkel on one of the local reefs around their Bajau “sea gypsy” community and learn more about this nomadic culture. Tonight we cruise overnight as we cross from the land of the sea nomads towards the Wakatobi National Park area. 

D A Y  9

Wake up to the Wakatobi National Park area, a hard to reach far-flung archipelago filled with fascinating culture. One of Indonesia’s best national parks, the underwater life natural is simply outstanding offering unrivalled beauty at every turn. 

Start with a personalised tour of the island of Wangi-Wangi, whose highlights include a seaweed farm, a traditional weaving community and the ruins of a centuries’ old Dutch fort, a relic of the ancient Spice Trade. In the afternoon, dive underwater where the water is clear and full of rich vibrant corals. We can also take a little stroll around a number of sea nomad villages.  

D A Y  1 0

Our tenth day is definitely one for water babies! We begin the day with a snorkelling session at Tomia where we will snorkel in front of a magnificent house reef. 

In the afternoon, we explore a nearby uninhabited atoll where guests have the chance to beach-comb, snorkel, paddle-board, or kayak.  Bliss!

D A Y  1 1

In the morning, we wake up to view an uninhabited sea mount in the middle of the Flores Sea. The rich upwelling nutrients here means it is a perfect habitat for fish who flourish in raising their young. We will spend some time here for snorkelling and some exploring before sailing onwards for overnight cruising towards the southern tip of Sulawesi.

Another full day of underwater adventure and exploration awaits us today. The entire day will be spent exploring one of the most beautiful collections of reefs and atolls with palm fringed white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters.  

The itinerary for today is yours to choose from. Whether you would like to kick back and relax on board while watching the endless luminous blue waters, lounge on the sand, explore the shallow reefs on kayaks or paddle-boards, or lose yourself in the frenzy of the rich reefs. 

D A Y  1 3

For a taste of Indonesia culture, today, walk amongst the hulls and hulks of a huge unlaunched flotilla of pinisi ships being built on a remote island archipelago. Meet the shipwrights and discover the  age-old traditions of shipbuilding, honed for centuries in this forgotten corner of the world, using basic plans, wood, and a collection of simple tools and age-old techniques.  

Rarely visited by tourists outside of SeaTrek, seeing this open-air boatyard is an experience to be savoured. As we walk through the village and along the beaches, meet the locals and gain a new appreciation for island life.

D A Y  1 4

Giants will loom large in today: Komodo dragons, flying foxes and manta rays, three of the biggest and most impressive animals in Indonesia. 

Spend your morning lazily drifting with Manta Rays, the gentle giant as they feed by glide in the current at their go-to local cleaning stations. 

In the afternoon, take a privately arranged, ranger-led walk around the island of Rinca, where we will see not only Komodo dragons, but also their preferred menu of prey – monkeys, deer, pigs, and buffaloes.  Then, in the evening, as the sun sets, we will gather on the deck to witness a spectacular event as thousands of flying foxes leave their mangrove forest homes en masse on their nightly fruit-foraging missions. 

D A Y  1 5

Rising early, there is the chance to hike a scenic route of Gili Lawa Darat or stretch your legs on the beautiful white-sandy beach as you stroll the shore line. After the hike, climb back on board for a mission: to count how many turtles can we spot with our own eyes in Siaba Besar island, famous as a turtle haven. In the late afternoon, spend some time relaxing at the beach where the time is yours to do anything you’d like ranging from snorkelling, paddle-boarding, kayaking, or just beach combing. 

For your final evening, the crew will prepare a beach BBQ for you to feast, sing and dance the night away next to a roaring fire under a star-filled sky.

On your final day, wake as the boat is cruising slowly into the magnificent town of Labuan Bajo. After a final Indonesian breakfast on the boat, we will say farewell to our crew, who have looked after us so well for the past seventeen days, and transfer to Komodo airport for our flight and our onward journey. 

Please note that this is a guide as to what to expect from your sailing holiday in Indonesia. With the ever changing wind and tides, flexibility is key. Our mission is to provide the best experience possible for our guests given the current conditions and when unexpected opportunities for adventure may present themselves along our cruise routes.

Sometimes weather conditions, tides or other local factors dictate that we need to vary from the published route, and at times there are special opportunities to explore and discover new locations, events and activities. These explorations will always be a definite enhancement to the published itinerary and will be undertaken after discussion and agreement among guests. Ultimately, the boat captains and your tour leader will make decisions to maximise trip safety and your overall enjoyment, so please come prepared to be flexible!

Ombak Putih is a traditional Indonesian pinisi sailing vessel built in 1995 on the island of Borneo. Part of a centuries-old maritime tradition of hand-crafted boat-building now classified as UNESCO cultural heritage.

Built by local Indonesian craftsmen using traditional hand tools and Indonesian hard-woods, Ombak Putih is full of cultural knowledge passed down from father to son over centuries. Working alongside her sister ship Katharina, (smaller but equally as beautiful!), they are both fine examples of some of the few original boats that still sail these waters.

Now led by Captain Jurfi, Ombak Putih takes guests on skippered sailing holidays to explore the cultural heritage, natural wonders and wildlife of the Indonesian islands.

Above decks, Ombak Putih has over 400sqm of communal space divided over her two main deck areas. A large saloon sits mid-ships at deck level with 360degree views with a large-covered canopy area to the bows for alfresco dining and daytime relaxation. A top deck sits above the saloon giving guests a secluded relaxation and sun-bathing area, as well as stunning views across the archipelago.

The galley sits to the stern and is really where this boat comes to life. With 14 crew on hand, you won’t have to a lift a finger with freshly-prepared meals showcasing the very best of Indonesian cuisine and hospitality.

Below decks, her interior refit has been to a high standard with spacious cabins and campion-ways.  Hand-crafted beds using local timber and locally made soft furnishings give the boat an authentic Indonesian feel. There are 12 private ensuite cabins for guests in a combination of double beds, twin bunks and three berth cabins.

Life on-board Ombak Putih is one of traditional Indonesian culture, from the welcoming local crew to the fresh local delicacies, fascinating endemic species and breath-taking Indonesian landscapes. The local people are at the heart of everything that Ombak Putih does. From employing local people to sail her to the traditional craftsmen that built her, the networks and connections that have been nurtured by the crew are heart-warming. Visit remote villages where you’re greeted by running children, laughing and joking, sharing their local crafts. Dance around the fire, play music, exchange gifts and wonder their fascinating corner of paradise.

Sleeping and Relaxation

With six private, air-conditioned en-suite cabins full of traditional Indonesian charm, spacious communal area, alfresco dining areas and sun-lounge deck, Ombak Putih offers plenty of seclusion and relaxation. There are kayaks, snorkel gear and SUP’s for guests to use and the crew can arrange extra activities ashore from kite-surfing to cookery classes.

There are a total of 14 crew on Ombak Putih so you really won’t have to lift a finger. From home-made cocktails, freshly prepared Indonesian cuisine, there is even a host to take care of any extra excursion planning.

Kit list

Packing for your cruise is easy; you don’t have to glam up as everyone tends to dress casually, so choose clothes that are comfortable for walking/trekking and suitable for wearing on the boat. Please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have visited South East Asia before may have their own preferences.

CLOTHING

• Cool cottons – t-shirts, shorts, sundresses
• Lightweight waterproof jacket – despite cruising in the dry season, rain is always a possibility
• Lightweight fleece – useful for pre-dawn treks, a cool wind on deck and for your flight
• Clothes that cover you modestly (at least over shoulders and past the knee) for visiting Muslim areas of the country
• At least one smart/casual outfit for sunset cocktails and evening meals on the boat
• Swimwear (at least 2); a rash vest or spring wetsuit will protect you from the sun, abrasions and stings 
• Sun shirts, beach covers ups/kaftans and sarongs that dry easily
• Wide brimmed sunhat or cap

FOOTWEAR

• Waterproof sandals or reef shoes
• Flip flops – easy to remove at the beach and light to carry
• Comfortable trainers, trekking sandals, sturdy walking or hiking shoes

ACCESSORIES

• Reef safe SPF for skin and hair and an aloe-based, alcohol free after-sun lotion
• Sunglasses: strap advised for activities
• Lightweight telescopic walking/hiking pole
• Day backpack – essential on hikes to carry your own water, camera, binoculars and rain jacket
• Waterproof wet/dry bag – for electronics and precious belongings
• Moisturiser, leave-in conditioner in addition to your regular favourite toiletries
• Headscarf/band and hair ties/grips – to keep hair out of your face whilst underway and to prevent stray hairs finding their way into your mask whilst snorkelling/diving and water seeping in 
• Snorkelling equipment is provided, but if you are already a keen snorkeller you may wish to take your own. If you’re new to snorkelling, you might want to consider purchasing a full-face snorkel mask as it’s easier for beginners
• Photography/videography gear and/or binoculars – take plenty of memory cards as these cannot be purchased in remote locations
• Seasickness tablets are provided onboard, but you may wish to pack your own preferred brand. If you are worried about possible seasickness, we advise you to start taking any medication 12 hours before departure. Ginger biscuits, tea and crystallised ginger are also good stomach settlers that you may wish to pack
• You’ll find reference books and paperback novels on board. However, books of your choice or an e-reader will come in handy for down hours
• There is a sound system on board, but you can bring your own music as well if you wish/portable speaker/earphones so you can listen to your own music in a private corner of the boat
• There is a comprehensive wilderness first aid kit on board but remember to bring any personal medications you may need

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Essential items should be packed in your carry-on luggage. Medications, corrective lenses, spare underwear, cameras and documents should not be checked in case your bag does not arrive with you. Never place valuables in checked luggage.

• It is mandatory that all guests must have a comprehensive policy that covers medical with an emergency evacuation policy (Medivac), and proof of this must be shown.

We also strongly urge our guests to purchase a comprehensive insurance policy that covers trip cancellation and interruption insurance 

• As you are travelling to remote locations, you could be as long as 2 days away from a clinic (and it really only might be a clinic and not a hospital) and a day away from an airfield to be lifted
• There is a defibrillator onboard, a large medical kit and all crew are first aid trained
• Please ensure that all necessary travel documents are valid, effective and in your possession. Passports are required for all participants and MUST be valid for at least SIX MONTHS after your date of return by Indonesian law
• Most foreign nationals to Indonesia can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival, but citizens of a small number of countries do not enjoy this privilege and have to apply for visa in the country of origin or elsewhere outside of Indonesia prior to arrival

• We recommend that all our passengers double-check on the requirements as they are in force at the time of their arrival. Please assume full responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements

All food is made on board and local, fresh produce is top of the shopping list. We try to rendezvous with the local fishermen to get local seafood and fresh produce. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served buffet style.

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

FAQ

• Are all meals included?

  Yes - all meals are included in the price (breakfast, lunch, dinner, hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Vegetarian, halal, kosher, children’s fare, low fat dishes, allergies, etc. However, we must be notified in advance of any special needs so we can make arrangements.

• Are there any added extra's?

  No, unless you go ashore. Excursions are not included.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  (All cabins are ensuites) 6 x double cabins, 2 x triple cabins (one double bed & one upper single bunk), 4 x twin bunk cabins.

• Is there a porthole in my cabin?

  Yes.

• How many toilet/showers does she have?

  There are 12 ensuites with each cabin.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All bedding and shower towels are included. Please bring your own swimming towels.

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  Yes, on average you can wash two pieces a day if/as required.

• Is there air conditioning onboard?

  Yes.

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but very much appreciated.

• What language is spoken onboard?

  English is the common deck language but there will be international guests and crew.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan.

• Can I charge my phone/Camera?

  Yes - there are plenty of USB sockets available.

• What is the currency on board?

  IDR Indonesian Rupiah.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Ombak is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up and over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are Waterproofs provided?

  No.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  No, absolutely not! Just a need for adventure.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  Yes, she has kayaks, SUP, snorkelling equipment, fishing gear and 2 tender boats.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are at all worried to take some medication 24 hours before departure. Ginger tea and biscuits also help with sea sickness.

• Is there an age limit?

  Min age is three years.
