YOUR SAILING AREA
Cape Verde to Netherlands
This ocean-going voyage allows you to experience the real sailor’s life as you become part of the crew and participate in the ship’s watch system. Take the helm, become a deck crew member, and settle into the watch system as life at sea washes over you. On this ocean sailing voyage, you will learn every aspect of sailing a classic tall ship.
Cape Verde is located in the trade wind belt. This means good weather and winds from a northerly to an easterly direction. As a result, we try to sail as close to the wind as possible. After a few days, the trade wind becomes less strong and the temperature slightly drops. Now, we are sailing in a very different climate: the west wind belt. The weather here is changeable, and every few days, a low-pressure system passes through. At this latitude, this mostly brings westerly winds, drizzle, and after the cold front passes, clearing skies again. Since the wind is changeable, we must regularly adjust our sails and reefs and change course as needed.
Closer to the Azores, there is a good chance of seeing whales. Even this far offshore, there are still many birds around us. With some luck, we will see not only schools of flying fish but also dolphins, sunfish, and other marine animals. We expect to arrive in Horta on the island of Faial no later than March 14.
On March 16, we will start the second part of our journey to Den Helder. We suggest arriving in Faial a few days early. The island is beautiful and lush, especially in spring. Spring arrives early at this latitude and the weather is not too cold. However, the Azores has a changeable maritime climate, so it’s best to bring both shorts and a raincoat. Upon boarding, the crew will provide detailed instructions on life on board, safety procedures, and our upcoming voyage.
Close to the Azores, there is a good chance that we will see whales. Even later during the trip, we are not alone. Even this far out at sea, there are birds around us, and occasionally we see moonfish, dolphins, and other sea creatures. As we approach the English Channel, the colour of the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean changes to green, a sign that the continental shelf is beginning. Here, the seabed rises steeply from a depth of five kilometres to 200 meters. Hundreds of seabirds and fishing boats mark these nutrient-rich waters.
If the trip goes well, we will certainly have time for one or two stopovers in an English or French port or on one of the Channel Islands. In the last week of March, we will sail through the Strait of Dover into the North Sea for the final miles to Den Helder, arriving on March 29. On March 30, after breakfast, you will disembark at Willemsoord, the historic maritime heart of Den Helder.
Getting Involved
The professional and experienced crew will teach you everything you need to know as you will sail with and become part of the crew, hoisting sails, taking the helm and getting involved with all aspects of sailing a tall ship. Morgenster will sail continuously with a watch system aboard. Everyone is invited to join the watch system aboard, but this is not mandatory – the ship is fully crewed. You’ll never be without a crew member,r and the watch system will be worked out once everyone has boarded to gauge guest abilities.
From plotting our route on the chart to cooking together, some celestial navigation skills, hoisting and trimming sails, and rope work and repairs, there is always something for everyone to do while on watch. The rest of the time is free to enjoy the inky black of the night sky, reading a book or three or playing cards together; the ocean allows guests to switch off from the demands of the modern world and fill their souls with vitamin-Sea.
Sailing by the stars
Far from land, miles into the open ocean, you’ll see the night sky as you have never seen it before. The stars light the sky as we sail away from artificial light pollution, creating a truly spectacular sight.
Weather
Part of the beauty of an ocean-going adventure is experiencing all the elements. We will certainly see them all from wind, rain and sun. Whatever comes our way, the crew will use weather radar technology to plan our route as best they can to ensure we cover the most miles as safely as possible. Expect strong winds and big waves, perfect sailing to glassy seas with not a breath of, and everything in between.
The crew says, “This voyage is only suitable for the experienced and fit (sea) traveller. The weather could be challenging, and during a crossing, there are few, if not any, options to divert to a harbour. We sail out of reach of helicopters, and medical care from shore is usually available. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. Some voyages are more challenging than others. If you are unsure whether this voyage suits you, please contact us”.
