This offshore sailing adventure offers some great opportunities to take the night watch (with a crew member, of course!) and sail under the stars, gently swaying with the rhythms of sailing a traditional wooden boat at night. There’s a great sense of peace as the ship settles down for the evening, and your eyes become adjusted to the night sky with little light pollution from land – it’s a spectacular sight on a clear night.

During this voyage, we will mainly sail in open waters both during the day and at night. Our final destination is Oban, but we will have to make stops at different harbours and anchorages depending on the weather and tides. We could potentially stop anywhere between the Isle of Man and the coast of Northern Ireland before continuing our journey towards the Scottish coast.

A Sailors Voyage

Sailing through the St. George’s Channel presents an opportunity to take the night watch and sail under the starry sky, enjoying the peaceful ambience as the ship prepares to settle down for the night. After traversing the St. George’s Channel, the voyage proceeds towards Peel Harbour on the Isle of Man, which serves as your first stop on the journey. Here, our chef goes ashore to procure traditionally cured kippers, which have been made in Peel since the 19th century.

As ‘Man’ slips astern, Bessie Ellen will head on up the North Channel past the mountains of Mourne Islay (pronounced ‘eye-la’), one of skipper Nikki’s favourite locations. Historically, the island served as the meeting place for Scottish clan leaders, but it is now a paradise for whisky lovers, boasting a fantastic eight distilleries. Each is nestled on the shores around the island and offers the chance to sample some of the finest malt whiskies in the world.

As we reach the West Coast of Scotland under sail,  our final stops will likely be Colonsay or Jura as we pass the narrow strait of Coryvrekkan between Jura and Scarba. Once through, the gateway to the Hebrides is open free and Bessie Ellen will make her way to Oban, where guests will depart.

Getting Involved

The crew actively encourage guests to get involved with all aspects of sailing on a traditional vessel – it is an all-hands-on-deck attitude. This all-hands-on-deck approach ensures an engaging and inclusive experience for everyone. Even if you have no sailing experience, the crew’s expertise and guidance will have you hoisting sails, taking the helm in open waters, mastering essential rope work, and even picking up some navigation skills. Bessie Ellen welcomes adventurers of all backgrounds, provided they love adventure and the natural world!

The other important crew member is ship dog Bracken! A small border terrier well-versed in life on board, he loves watching for dolphins, exploring ashore and sleeping under sail.

Sleeping and relaxation

Below decks, guests are indulged in a spacious saloon with original wooden beams, comfy open bunks and two toilet/wet rooms where you’d be forgiven for forgetting that you were even on a boat! Each bunk has a light, complete bedding and a privacy curtain. A tiny galley sits tucked mid-ships, and you will be in awe and wonder at the meals that come out of this space. Meals are often eaten up on deck during the day, and by evening, everyone retires to the cosy saloon to feast after a day on the water. 

Nikki is a competent skipper and an incredible cook using locally sourced produce everywhere possible.

Bessie Ellen

Bessie Ellen has limited space for possessions, so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. Each bunk is allocated a storage chest to store your items, but there is no storage for rigid cases, so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items; these are not mandatory, and those who have sailed before may have their preferences!

• Fingerless gloves for hoisting sails (sailing or cycling are best)
• Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
• Please consider waterproof sailing boots OR clean farmer’s wellies!
• Wash towel
• Flip-flops or crocs for wet room showering
• Swimsuit and swim towel (optional) 
• Lightweight, quick-dry clothes (base layers, fleece and synthetic tops are lightweight and quick-drying!)

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea, so please bring many layers, even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

• Warm, windproof and waterproof coat and trousers. (There are some emergency oilskins, but these are not permitted to be taken off the boat)
• Sun cream (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Sunglasses and a warm hat/cap
• Refillable water bottle
• Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
• Camera/binoculars 
• Personal wash kit (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Smidge’ midge repellent – only necessary when sailing in Scotland
• Each bunk berth has a privacy curtain, so we advise sleep masks and/or earplugs!
• Charging cables for personal devices (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices)
• A good book to read!
• Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

Breakfast

• Creamy mashed potatoes with mustard and finely chopped spring onions

Dessert

• Tart Tatin served celeriac ice cream
• Local cheeses and biscuits
• Coffee and home-made chocolates

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

• Are all meals included?

  Yes, all meals on board are included in the price. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Yes, please let us know at the time of enquiry.

• Are there any added extras?

  There's an honesty bar for soft drinks and alcohol.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  There are 12 comfortable berths in the former cargo hold. This is an open plan area that is also used for meals and relaxing. Each bunk has its own reading light and privacy curtain.

• Is there a porthole in my berth?

  There are portholes within the saloon for natural light but not in each berth.

• How many toilets/showers does she have?

  Bessie Ellen has two toilets/showers for guests.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All your bedding (duvet and pillow) is provided but please bring your own towels (washing and/or swimming).

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  No, Bessie does not have laundry facilities on board.

• Is there heating on board?

  Yes there is heating if needed!

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but are welcomed by the crew!

• What language is spoken on board?

  English.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from the modern tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan if needed.

• Can I charge my phone or camera?

  Yes. We run generators every day in the morning and evening, which run the 240 volt system of normal 3 pin sockets.

• What is the currency on board?

  GBP - Pounds Sterling.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Bessie Ellen is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up the boats step ladder over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are waterproofs available?

  No. Please bring your own. There are a few oilskins spare for emergencies only.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  Not at all. We give everyone who joins us on board the choice to do as much or as little as they like, whether the know how to or not.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  No.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are worried to take some medication 24 hours before travelling.

• Is there an age limit?

  No, but we advise over 16's for scheduled voyages as there is an open saloon sleeping arrangement. There is no limit for private charter.

GETTING THERE

Gloucester Docks/Quays

BY RAIL

Gloucester train station is about a 20-minute walk to Gloucester Quays. Alternatively, you can pick up a bus from Gloucester bus station (also known as Gloucester Transport Hub), only a few minutes walk away. Regular buses stop directly outside Gloucester Quays.

BY CAR

It is possible to park at Gloucester Quays car park or Gloucester train station. If you park at the train station, you can pick up a bus to Gloucester Quays from the bus station, a few minutes walk away.

Getting Home

OBAN, Scotland

BY RAIL:

Oban station is a 5-10 minute walk from North Pier. Trains run six times daily to Glasgow Queen Street Station, where there are good travel links to the rest of the UK.

BY AIR:

Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport require a train from Oban, which takes approximately 2-3 hours. Flights go directly to Stansted Airport.
