It was this part of the dramatic Cornish coast that helped to inspire Daphne Du Maurier’s bestselling novels. Her very first, The Loving Spirit, depicts the Slade family, shipbuilders from Polruan building and sailing craft similar to Bessie Ellen. Whilst Menabilly, the setting for the infamous ‘Rebecca’, is just along the coast.
Over the weekend Bessie’s crew will teach guests as much as possible about the sailing and manoeuvring of a ship, tacking up to the historic port of Charlestown and coming up to anchor under sail. The skipper’s interest is to show you how these ships were handled for centuries and this sheltered bay provides a perfect learning ground if you are new to tall ship sailing.
On departing Fowey the itinerary will be dependent on the weather howevr once Bessie has rounded Gribben head, she may sail past Lantic bay and set the topsails for a short visit to Polperro and Looe before finding a sheltered anchorage for the night.
During the voyage there will be several opportunities to step ashore and stretch your legs on a circular walk prior to returning back for a fantastic on board meal, freshly prepared. Using the finest local ingredients, they create dishes like cod with chorizo (Cornish of course) and our home-grown pork, served with his homemade medlar chutney. The grand finale to your weekend aboard will be a traditional cream tea (cream on top!) back at our berth on the river in Fowey.
