Sailing the Caribbean; a Bucket List Adventure

Sailing the Caribbean; a Bucket List Adventure

As one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, the Caribbean can often feel overly busy and commercialised. However, the waters here are among some of the best in the world for sailing thanks to constant, warm trade winds and plentiful anchorages.

Sailing the Caribbean opens up a whole new way to discover this outstandingly beautiful part of the world. Offering far more than just a holiday, these island-hopping adventures provide freedom, beauty and adventure. Whether you’re gliding over crystal-clear turquoise waters or exploring lush rainforests, sailing the Caribbean is the ultimate holiday experience.

Why Sailing the Caribbean is Unmatched

The Caribbean is a sailor’s paradise, with an idyllic combination of warm weather, steady winds, and over 7,000 islands to explore. Unlike a traditional land-based holiday, sailing gives you the freedom to travel where the winds and tides dictate, visiting secluded beaches, uninhabited islands, and vibrant local hotspots.

Many of these are often unreachable by larger boats such as the huge cruise ships which can dominate the horizon. Our smaller vessels can take you far off the beaten track to discover a more authentic side of the Caribbean.

Top Destinations when Sailing the Caribbean

While each island has its own unique charm, some areas in the Caribbean are particularly famous for their sailing conditions and desirable anchorages. With many of our fleet spending the European winter months in the Caribbean we can offer the chance to experience some of the must-visit destinations:

  • British Virgin Islands (BVI): Often referred to as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, the BVIs are perfect for both beginner and experienced sailors. With calm, protected waters and short distances between islands, you can easily sail from one island to the next. Highlights include snorkelling at The Baths on Virgin Gorda, anchoring at Jost Van Dyke for the famous Soggy Dollar Bar, and exploring the pristine beaches of Anegada.
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines:  For a more off-the-beaten-path adventure, sail through the Grenadines, a chain of 32 islands known for their natural beauty and secluded anchorages. Don’t miss the Tobago Cays Marine Park, where you can swim with sea turtles and explore vibrant coral reefs. Starting from Saint Vincent, you can sail through the Grenadines, stopping at charming islands like Bequia, Mustique, and Union Island. Each has its own flavour, from the luxurious vibes of Mustique to the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of Bequia.

The Bahamas: While technically just outside the Caribbean, the Bahamas are a must for sailors. With shallow waters, a maze of islands, and picture-perfect beaches, the Exumas in particular are a dream for those looking to anchor in secluded bays and explore uninhabited cays. Join Bonnie Lynn for an exclusive charter experience around these jaw-droppingly beautiful islands.

Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy: Begin your sailing journey in the dual-nation island of Saint Martin, then head to the chic and glamorous Saint Barthélemy (St. Barts). With upscale boutiques, world-class dining, and stunning beaches, St. Barts offers a taste of luxury in the heart of the Caribbean.

What to Expect when Sailing the Caribbean

Incredible Snorkeling and Diving: The Caribbean is home to some of the best marine life in the world. Drop anchor near a reef and dive in to explore coral gardens teeming with colourful fish, sea turtles, and rays. Top spots include the Tobago Cays in the Grenadines and the coral reefs surrounding the BVIs.

Relaxation and Tranquillity: One of the best parts of sailing is the sense of freedom and solitude. You can anchor in secluded bays, enjoy a sunset far from the crowds and spend an entire day lounging on an empty beach. With plenty of open sea, sailing in the Caribbean allows you to enjoy this paradise at your own pace.

Local Culture and Cuisine: Drop anchor at a bustling harbour, visit a colourful local market, and sample the region’s culinary delights, from fresh seafood to spicy jerk chicken. In the evenings, relax at a beachfront bar with a rum punch in hand and soak in the island rhythms before returning to your cabin and being gently rocked to sleep.

Skippered Charter Sailing in the Caribbean

All our ventures offer the skipper chartered sailing in the Caribbean experience. So if you’re new to sailing or simply want to relax without handling the boat yourself, then climb aboard with us! You can choose to take the helm or simply sit back and relax whilst still enjoying the full sailing experience.

What do I need to know before sailing the Caribbean?

We advise all our guests to pack light and pack smart. Space is limited on a boat so bringing soft bags is preferable over hard suitcases, which can be tricky to manoeuvre and store. And whilst the temperatures on land may be high, the winds on the water are always cooling so we advise layers for the days where the wind has picked up. Sunscreen, sunglasses, swimwear, and comfortable clothing are absolute must-haves too!

And last, but certainly not least, we urge all guests to please respect the environment. The Caribbean’s natural beauty is its biggest draw with the waters home to an array of marine life so please be mindful. Our captains will always avoid anchoring on coral reefs whilst encouraging guests to throw nothing overboard, not to use single-use plastic and apply marine-safe sunscreen. As the saying goes, leave nothing in your wake.
