A sailing holiday in Greece with Zorba is accessible to all ages and abilities. Her simple rig makes her an easy sail with winch systems and modern navigation equipment. That being said, she’s a great boat to sail, whether you’re an experienced sailor looking for some sunshine or a novice wanting to try something new.
Zorba is a modern and comfortable Beneteau Cyclades 50.5. She has four private double cabins for guests, all of which share three bathrooms with showers. With a generous saloon and a well-equipped galley, Zorba was built with charter and guest comfort at the forefront of her design. With a dropped transom and outdoor seating area at the stern, Zorba gives guests the perfect access to that crystal-clear Mediterranean water!
Her owners and skippers absolutely love what they do, and that’s very evident to guests to see, and even better to experience firsthand. They are well tuned to all abilities and ages, from family charters with young children to groups of friends or voyages for couples and solo travellers. They tailor every trip to suit their guests’ needs, so if you simply want to sit back, enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine and enjoy the cuisine of the local tavernas – that’s fine too!
“No hurry…” is the motto that Zorba sails by…
…from hidden anchorages away from the tourist hustle and bustle to traditionally Greek seaside tavernas, Zorba truly offers guests an unforgettable, authentic sailing holiday in Greece. From family-friendly charters to voyages for couples and solo travellers alike, Zorba certainly has something for everyone.
Authentic Greece
During all of Zorba’s voyages, the aim is to stay far away from tourist crowds – instead choosing the small harbours or anchorages next to desert islands. Each day, guests stop for swimming in beautiful bays – some of them wild, others with one small taverna, serving lunch: fresh fish and seafood (often taken out of the water before our eyes). There is always the possibility of jogging/yoga in the morning, organic, healthy food on board and a healthy lifestyle close to nature. Friendly local people and lots of tasty food and wine are common features across all the islands Zorba visits. Zorba’s owners, Aga and Greg, also have a great connection with an authentic Greek Vineyard near Methana, and their crew can arrange for a tour and dinner for guests who wish.
All of Zorba’s voyages offer the perfect balance of relaxation, sightseeing and of course, sailing! Depending on the itinerary, Aga and Greg always recommend and organise excursions to the historical sites or other places worth visiting.
A Typical Day
Wake up, eat breakfast, have some coffee in the village or take a little walk to stretch the legs before we sail away.
Sail for a few hours each day before reaching a beautiful bay with a deserted beach. There is plenty of time for snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, exploring the island/bay, reading books and general relaxation! Together, prepare lunch (Greek salad seems perfect for the hot day!) and have some downtime – maybe even a little siesta.
Spend the afternoon sailing before the evening comes, and you reach a new island, moor in a lovely small village and explore the new place (they say sunset in Hydra is even better than in Santorini!) As a rule of thumb, in the evening, everyone will go to a traditional Taverna to try some excellent local food and the delicious Greek wine, dance the Zorba, listen to live music, and relax!
Getting Involved
Your sailing holiday in Greece is truly as you make it. Zorba is a fun and simple boat to sail, and the skipper can sail it alone if guests prefer a more relaxing experience. That said, the larger Saronic Gulf offers great sailing conditions for those wanting to learn the ropes in a safe, supported environment. The skipper has many years of experience sailing here, so he loves to share his knowledge and skills with guests. From knot tying to basic navigation, taking the helm and reading the local charts, guests are welcome to get involved as much or as little as they’d like.
Polish sailing couple Aga and Greg have been organising sailing holidays in Greece, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean for more than 15 years. With a long list of happy customers worldwide, they spend half of the year in Greece and the other half in the Caribbean.
Their favourite quote is “Happy is the man, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to sail the Aegean sea”
(Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek)
They have two boats: Zorba and their catamaran, Zorba Cat. While they will be sailing close by alongside in their catamaran, Aga’s sister (called Agata!) and skipper Arnon will be sailing Zorba.
Agata
Agata has been sailing on and off with her sister and Greg over the years, so she knows firsthand where the best swimming spots are and which tavernas are the most special. Aga has trained her to give guests the same high standard, cooking beautifully healthy breakfasts and fresh lunches aboard.
Skipper information to follow…
One evening 15 years ago, after a 10-hour workday at a big corporation, owner Greg sat down at the computer and wanted to buy some Wellingtons online. A few hours later, he ended up buying a sailing boat instead, and that is how this adventure began (Wellingtons are still on the list!).
“Happy is the man, I thought, who, before dying, has the good fortune to sail the Aegean sea” – Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek
Zorba is not only the name of Aga and Greg’s boat, it’s the philosophy behind it: You only have one life, so enjoy every minute of it and create wonderful memories – that’s how one can sum up the adventures of Zorba the Greek, written by Nikos Kazantzakis. Owners Aga and Greg share their love for Greece – the slow life, the marvellous, sunny landscape, and the kind people with unbreakable optimism. They appreciate the beauty of nature, the joy of life, good music and great food. So when you are on board with Zorba, you naturally begin to share this philosophy and feel its positive influence.
“I felt once more how simple and frugal a thing is happiness: a glass of wine, a roast chestnut, a wretched little brazier, the sound of the sea. Nothing else.”
― Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek
Aga and Greg both changed their lives completely, leaving behind their stressful jobs with long working hours and no time for family or friends. Zorba is not only where they met, but also where they began a new chapter called “joy” in their lives. They have since added Zorba Cat to their family, and Zorba is now sailing alongside them with Aga’s sister and skipper Arnon taking the helm.
