Sweden Archipelago Sailing Aboard a Historic Tall Ship

Gothenburg → Marstrand → Kosterfjord → Swedish Archipelago

This Swedish archipelago sailing adventure begins in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city, and one of Scandinavia’s great maritime ports. Set on the west coast where the Göta river meets the sea, its harbourfront is a natural starting point for a journey north along one of Europe’s most remarkable coastlines.

From Gothenburg, Iris heads out into the West Swedish Archipelago. More than 8,000 islands, islets, and skerries make up this stretch of coastline, ranging from small inhabited communities with painted wooden houses and working harbours to bare granite outcrops where nothing grows but lichen and the occasional windswept pine. The archipelago is at its finest when explored slowly, and there is no better way to do that than under sail.

The exact route will shift with the wind and weather, but each day tends to follow a rhythm: sailing in the morning, exploring ashore in the afternoon, and settling into a quiet anchorage as the long Scandinavian evening light fades slowly across the water. Get to grips with life on board as you help set the sails, take the helm, and learn some basic rope-work under the guidance of Jans and Liv, Iris’s owners and skippers, who know these waters well.

The West Swedish Archipelago – Islands, Skerries and Scandinavian Coastline

The islands of the West Swedish Archipelago each have their own character, and part of the pleasure of Swedish archipelago sailing is not knowing exactly which ones you’ll visit until the wind decides. Below is a sense of what this coastline has to offer:

• Marstrand – a car-free island town dominated by the 17th-century Carlsten Fortress, with a lively harbour and some of the finest fish restaurants on the Swedish coast
• Kosterfjorden – Sweden’s deepest fjord and part of the country’s first marine national park, with exceptional wildlife both above and below the waterline
• Fjällbacka – a picture-perfect harbour town tucked between granite cliffs, known for its connection to author Camilla Läckberg and loved by Swedish sailors
• Lysekil – a classic Swedish sea town on the Bohuslän coast, with rock pools, sea bathing, and easy walks along the headland
• The outer skerries – bare, wind-smoothed rock islands where grey seals bask in the sun, and seabirds nest undisturbed in summer

The Bohuslän coast, the stretch of coastline running north from Gothenburg, has an elemental beauty that stays with you. Smooth granite shores, clear water, and wooden boathouses reflected in still harbours: it is quiet in the way that only genuinely unhurried places are.

Wildlife, Nature and the Rhythm of Slow Travel

Part of what makes a Swedish archipelago sailing holiday so special is the pace. You’re moving with the wind, not against the clock. The archipelago’s national park waters around Kosterfjorden are among the most biodiverse in Scandinavia, where porpoises are occasionally spotted on passages north, grey seals are a common sight on the outer islands, and the birdlife throughout the archipelago is exceptional in summer.

Mornings often begin with time ashore before breakfast. Take a walk along a granite headland, a swim from the rocks, or simply a coffee at the bow watching a harbour come to life. The evenings are long this far north in summer, and an anchorage at dusk, with the light still warm on the water, is one of those experiences that is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere.

Aboard Tall Ship Iris – A Traditional Ketch

Iris is a working vessel with real character. Her traditional ketch rig and sturdy steel hull make her a proper tall ship to learn on, and her layout below decks has been thoughtfully adapted for guest comfort. 12 guests sleep in 6 private twin cabins, with generous communal spaces to gather in at the end of each day’s sailing.

• Sleeping: 6 private twin cabins, sleeping up to 12 guests
• Saloon: Large shared saloon with a dining area, separate sofa area, and a small onboard library
• Food: Full board with everyone helping to prepare meals on board
• Experience: Hands-on sailing with guests encouraged to take an active role
