A sustainable sailing adventure along the UK’s coastline offers something rare: the freedom of the open sea, the thrill of discovery, and the satisfaction of travelling sustainably. This is a new kind of holiday — one that explores wild places without leaving a heavy footprint.
Here at Venture Sail, we believe travel should tread lightly — on the planet, and on the communities we visit. As climate awareness grows, more travellers are beginning to question the true cost of their holidays. Long-haul flights, package holidays, and carbon-heavy cruises are giving way to slower, more conscious ways to explore — and we’re proud to be part of that shift.
And there’s no need to look far. Right here in the UK, sustainable sailing holidays are quietly gaining attention. They offer a way to experience the country’s wild coastlines, remote islands, and maritime heritage in a way that aligns with the planet’s limits.
This is travel that moves at a different pace. More intentional. More sustainable.

Rethink How You Travel (and Why It Matters)
To make better travel choices, we first need to confront the true environmental cost of how we move through the world.
For decades, speed and convenience have dominated the travel industry. Budget flights have made far-flung destinations more accessible than ever, but at a high environmental price. Aviation alone contributes around 2-3% of global CO₂ emissions each year.
Cruise tourism is no longer benign. Per passenger kilometre, emissions on an ocean cruise are comparable to or higher than flying, but the impact doesn’t end there. Cruise ships often burn heavy fuel oils high in sulphur, release toxic wastewater, and can overwhelm fragile port towns with mass tourism.
Choosing to holiday closer to home already significantly reduces emissions. But choosing to travel under sail — powered by wind, with minimal reliance on fossil fuels — goes even further.
Our sustainable sailing holidays offer a radically lower-carbon alternative. Most of our propulsion comes from the wind, and engines are used only when needed for safety or harbour access. When paired with overland travel by train to and from departure ports, this kind of journey becomes one of the most sustainable travel options available today.
But lower carbon doesn’t mean a lesser experience. The UK’s coastlines are ecologically rich and geographically diverse, with habitats ranging from rugged sea cliffs to densely forested estuaries. Travelling slowly through these environments gives you the time to really connect with the landscapes around you.

Where We Sail: UK Adventures by Sea
Our voyages span some of the UK’s most stunning and ecologically rich coastlines — each offering something unique.
Cornwall & Devon: Sail past rugged cliffs and tidal estuaries, explore colourful harbour towns like Fowey and Salcombe, or drop anchor in secluded coves where the only sounds are seabirds and wind in the rigging.
The Hebrides: This remote Scottish archipelago is known for its dramatic sea stacks, white sand beaches, and wildlife-rich waters. It’s not uncommon to spot dolphins, minke whales, or even sea eagles while sailing here.
Isles of Scilly: With their subtropical climate, these islands offer crystal-clear waters, white beaches, and star-studded night skies. It’s a world apart, just 28 miles off the Cornish coast.
Jurassic Coast: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this stretch of Dorset and East Devon coastline is famous for its fossil-rich cliffs and ancient geological formations — best viewed from the sea.
Scottish Highlands: Experience the quiet majesty of Scotland’s west coast, where lochs, glens, and mountain-backed inlets create a backdrop of pure serenity.
Whether you’re after wild swimming, hiking, stargazing, or simply switching off, our itineraries let you experience the UK coast in a new way.

How We Sail Sustainably
At Venture Sail, sustainable sailing is embedded into every aspect of how we design and deliver our trips. We understand the necessity of preserving and protecting the fragile landscapes, habitats and waters in which we sail.
Group sizes are deliberately limited — not just for comfort, but to reduce environmental disruption and foster genuine connections with the crew and the places we visit. The difference in impact between ten people on a traditional vessel and thousands arriving by cruise ship is hard to overstate, especially in sensitive coastal communities.
We invite guests to participate in life on board, from helping to hoist sails to preparing meals. Living on board a VentureSail boat is a masterclass in low-impact living. With limited resources — water, energy, and space — everything is used mindfully. This necessity often inspires the kind of behaviour change that sustainability campaigns struggle to achieve.
Eco-friendly cleaning products replace harmful chemicals, helping protect delicate marine ecosystems. Single-use plastics are avoided, and ingredients for meals are sourced locally and seasonally whenever possible. We enjoy supporting coastal food producers and reducing the carbon footprint of supply chains.
Recycling and composting are managed responsibly, and any waste is returned to shore and disposed of properly. Our crew members live by example, modelling behaviours that help guests see how small, habitual choices can add up to meaningful reductions in environmental impact.
Sustainable sailing here isn’t just about reducing harm; it’s also about preserving maritime heritage. Many of our vessels are historic wooden ships with decades, sometimes over a century, of history. By keeping them in operation and well maintained, we support the preservation of traditional craftsmanship — a practice that is both culturally and environmentally significant. Keeping existing vessels in use, rather than building new ones from carbon-intensive materials, is a form of circular economy in action.

Our Eco-Tourism Pledge: Putting The Planet First
Our Eco-Tourism pledge sums up our sustainability ethos. It’s a practical framework that guides how we operate, sail, and engage with the natural world.
Waste is carefully managed. Wildlife is observed respectfully and at a distance. And every guest is encouraged to play an active role in protecting the environments we visit. Small actions, such as using marine-safe toiletries or bringing a reusable water bottle, reduce impact without compromising comfort.
For every booking, we plant a tree through Tree-Nation. We also partner with conservation organisations, such as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, to support the regions we sail through.
The message is clear: sustainable sailing isn’t about sacrifice, it’s about moving through the world with greater care and purpose.
Supporting Local: People, Places, and Purpose
Truly sustainable travel must also support the people and places it touches. Our model is rooted in deep respect for coastal communities, and that’s reflected in every trip we plan.
Rather than relying on bulk suppliers or centralised logistics, our crews source food, materials, and services from independent businesses in the ports and towns we visit. This means your holiday spend stays local — benefiting small economies rather than international hotel chains or offshore cruise companies.
In some areas, we invite local guides or naturalists on board to share their expertise, enriching our guests’ experiences and providing meaningful work for residents. These collaborations not only support livelihoods but also strengthen community ties to the natural landscapes that sustain them.
Importantly, small-scale travel avoids the over-tourismover tourism issues that have plagued some coastal destinations. When a village receives a handful of respectful visitors — rather than a thousand day-trippers — the result is a more balanced exchange. One that fosters appreciation rather than strain.

Wild Encounters on a Sustainable Sailing Adventure
For many guests, one of the highlights of a sailing holiday is the chance to see marine wildlife up close. The waters around the UK are rich in biodiversity, home to bottlenose dolphins, common seals, harbour porpoises, puffins, gannets, and even basking sharks.
But marine wildlife tourism isn’t always managed responsibly. High-speed boat tours, overcrowded viewing platforms, and vessel noise can disturb natural behaviour, interfere with feeding or breeding, and degrade fragile ecosystems.
Sailing offers a quieter, more sustainable alternative. Powered by wind and guided by experienced skippers, our vessels allow for low-impact wildlife observation. Often, with the engine off and sails up, guests can watch from a respectful distance, reducing noise and wake.
This passive, respectful approach fosters deeper appreciation and helps ensure the wildlife remains undisturbed. It’s a model for how tourism can be both inspiring and responsible.

A Different Kind of Adventure
A sailing holiday with Venture Sail isn’t just about where you go. It’s about how you move through the world.
Without the constant buzz of phones, traffic, or schedules, you fall into a rhythm set by nature. You wake with the sun, sail with the wind, and sleep under the stars.
It’s a slower pace — but a richer experience. One that leaves less behind and takes more meaningfully from the places it touches.
