sailing holidays in the Balearic Islands

Nestled off the eastern coast of Spain, the four Balearic Islands - Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera - are renowned for their natural beauty. With pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and a diverse mix of landscapes, exploring these islands by boat offers a unique perspective.

If you’re looking to get off the beaten track, immerse yourself in culture and dive into warm, turquoise waters, then choose the sun-soaked Balearic Islands. No two islands are the same, and sailing here is the best way to explore, enabling you to uncover places you can’t access by land. From the nature reserve of Isla de Cabrera to the pink-sand beaches of Ses Illetes in Formentera and Cala-Xinxell-Illetas in Mallorca, the Balearics are full of secret spots where you can drop anchor and dive into paradise.

Discover the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands, which belong to Spain, are comprised of four main islands. Whilst each boasts natural beauty and stunning beaches, they have a character of their own.

Mallorca – most of our sailing holidays in the Balearic Islands depart from and return to Mallorca, which is also the largest of the islands. The north coast is home to sheer, dramatic cliff tops, while the southern shores boast sheltered coves and tranquil bays. Explore the capital, Palma and hike up the impressive Serra de Tramuntana mountain range for sweeping views across the island and out to sea.

Menorca – this smaller and serene island lies further from mainland Spain than the other Balearic Islands and offers a more peaceful experience. Known for its picturesque, pine-fringed bays and golden sands, the island also boasts an outstanding array of archaeological, architectural, and cultural monuments. Enjoy uncovering sleepy Mediterranean villages, discovering ancient ruins and swimming in secluded bays without another soul in sight.

Ibiza – this island needs no introduction, thanks to its world-renowned party reputation. However, if you step away from the lively clubbing scene, you’ll soon discover an eclectic boho lifestyle surrounded by astonishing natural beauty. The western and northern shores, in particular, are dotted with beautiful anchorages from where you can take in some of the finest sunsets in the world.

Formentera – at just 20km and 2km wide, Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Known for its laidback vibe, there are numerous yoga and meditation spots to be found, along with quaint villages and unspoilt beaches. The roads here are generally car-free, allowing you to feel as though you have stepped back in time as you wander or cycle your way around. Simply perfect if you’re seeking to truly unwind and lose track of time.

Wildlife in the Balearic Islands

These beguiling islands are not just about the sea and the sun. They are home to a diverse array of wildlife thanks to numerous protected natural reserves. Keep your binoculars close, as you may spot the migratory Balearic Shearwater or Eleonora’s Falcon nesting in the clifftops.

Whilst ashore, look out for the Balearic Warbler, Balearic Lizard and Balearic Genet as well as other mammals and reptiles.

On the water, you may be treated to dolphins surfing in the bow waves or the spout of a sperm whale, which often seek sanctuary here. Plus, with over 400 fish species, turtles, seahorses, octopus and crustaceans, snorkelling in the Balearic Islands is also an absolute joy.

Sailing conditions in the Balearic Islands

Thanks to their location, the Balearic Islands enjoy calm winds, gentle seas, and warm weather for most of the year. During the summer months, a predictable breeze is present, particularly in the afternoon, making for enjoyable and safe sailing between anchorages. Add to that the short distances between islands, and you have a cruising ground that’s perfect for a sunny sailing holiday!

A sailing holiday in the Balearic Islands offers so much more than just a break from the daily grind — it’s a chance to live differently for a while and offers something for everyone.

With warm sun, clear turquoise waters, and a blend of buzzing towns and quiet anchorages, it’s easy to see why the Balearics are one of Europe’s most popular — and rewarding — sailing destinations.
