YOUR SAILING AREA
The Grenadines, Caribbean
Join Skyelark and her skippers, Dan and Em, on the Caribbean island of St Lucia. Starting and finishing in Rodney Bay, St Lucia, make the best use of the wind as you sail to explore the islands of St Vincent, Bequia, Tobago Cays and Union Island.
Experience the unspoilt, authentic Caribbean, away from the busy resorts and beaches, with a sailing holiday in the Grenadines. With ideal sailing conditions and fantastic weather, this is blue-water Caribbean sailing at its best.
St Vincent and the Grenadines are a southern Caribbean nation comprising the main island, St. Vincent and a chain of smaller idyllic islands. There are ample opportunities to explore a stunning collection of islands, go snorkelling amongst colourful reef fish with turtles, and enjoy fresh barbecued lobster on the beach at sundown. Anchor in secluded bays, dive from the bows of the boat and feel the powder-white sand between your toes.
St Vincent is an intriguing island covered in dense jungle and rolling hills and lined with black volcanic sandy beaches. Discover the set used for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie and explore waterfalls just a short walk from the beach. Spend some time here snorkelling, swimming and kayaking the coastline full of natural rock formations and archways.
The small scenic island of Union is another volcanic wonder. The scenery has been described as “straight out of Jurassic Park”—just without the dinosaurs! The usual coral reefs and white sandy beaches surround the island, perfect for afternoon relaxation, while the interior offers great hiking, volcano climbs, and waterfall swimming.
The island of Bequia (pronounced beck-way) directly translates into “island of the clouds”. One of the prettiest islands in the Grenadines, you’ll certainly see why it’s top of the anchorage list. Seemingly untouched by mass tourism, the island retains its authentic Caribbean charm with friendly locals and a truly relaxed way of life.
Tobago Cays is a true underwater paradise. Peer off the side of the boat into crystal clear waters, and you’ll be rewarded with colourful shoals of fish and fascinating coral reefs. You could spend days here kayaking and exploring. There is a turtle sanctuary nearby so swimming alongside turtles and stingrays is almost guaranteed. Run a line off the boat to catch a Red Snapper or two and take it ashore for a beachside BBQ, where star-gazing as the night draws in is a real treat for the eyes!
Wildlife watching in the Caribbean is an incredible experience. You can observe graceful green and loggerhead sea turtles gliding effortlessly through the water, as well as bottlenose dolphins swimming alongside the boat’s wake. The birdlife in the Caribbean is also stunning, so be sure to keep your binoculars handy to catch sight of these colourful creatures. Many species are unique to the Caribbean, making these encounters truly special. Pink flamingos are commonly found across the Caribbean islands; these sociable birds inhabit blue lagoons, mudflats, and lakes and often live in colonies that can number in the thousands.
