sailing in Sardinia

With crystal clear emerald waters and miles of beautiful, unspoilt coastline, Sardinia is a truly unforgettable sailing destination.

The La Maddalena islands are spectacularly beautiful, with a culture of their own. Dine in waterside trattorias, swim in warm, iridescent waters and enjoy the Robinson Crusoe-esque experience.

The second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia, offers fantastic sailing, with a mix of spectacular natural beauty, rich culture, and plenty of outdoor adventures.

Famed for its stunning beaches, Sardinia has over 1,800 kilometres of coastline, dotted with dramatic cliffs and picturesque coastal villages, each surrounded by dazzlingly crystal-clear waters. With much to explore and favourable conditions, this stunning Italian island is popular with sailors and its beauty is best explored by sea.

Experience the Costa Smeralda and Maddalena Archipelago

Lying on the northern tip of Sardinia, the Costa Smeralda is known for its bright turquoise waters, exclusive resorts and wellness centres. A must-see when sailing in Sardinia, the Costa Smeralda is glamorous and pristine, perfect for nature lovers and sailors alike, thanks to its combination of relaxed sailing conditions and untouched beauty.

Just off the coast of Costa Smeralda lies the La Maddalena Archipelago, a protected national park home to deserted beaches and deep turquoise lagoons. Often likened to a more rugged version of the Caribbean, the La Maddalena islands are spectacularly beautiful, with a culture of their own. Dine in waterside trattorias, swim in warm, iridescent waters and enjoy the Robinson Crusoe-esque experience.

Sail Around Southern Sardinia

For those who prefer a quieter, more rugged landscape, head south. This southern tip of Sardinia has been left off the main tourist trail until recently and offers a more unspoilt experience.

It is here that you will find the island’s capital, the port of Cagliari. Home to medieval city walls and an impressive 13th-century castle, the city is a diverse mix of culture, history and great anchorages.

Further along the coast lies the Villasimius area with picture-perfect bays and beaches. Experience the gorgeous beaches of Spiaggia di Simius and Spiaggia di Porto Giunco, which offer golden sands and clear waters that are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Or head to the protected nature reserve of Chia with its paradisiacal peachy-coloured sand beaches and scenic dunes

Sardinian Food and Drink

Owing to its eclectic history, Sardinia’s cuisine is a wonderful mix of cultural flavours, with fresh seafood, locally-sourced meats, and unique Sardinian specialties. It’s a food lover’s paradise.

Traditional dishes include Porceddu (a traditionally roasted suckling pig), Culurgiones (a Sardinian ravioli) and Seadas (a delicious fried pastry filled with cheese and drizzled with honey).

The temperate Sardinian climate has given birth to a rich wine culture, with unique wines such as Cannonau (a red wine) and Vermentino (a white wine). It is often possible to visit local vineyards during our ventures, such as those around Alghero and Mandrolisai, where you can tour the wineries before sampling their products.

Things to Do in Sardinia

The island’s diverse terrain and natural beauty mean that Sardinia is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of opportunities to enjoy activities such as hiking, yoga and watersports.

If you’re keen to stretch your legs, then there are plenty of mountain ranges, rugged terrain, steep valleys and ancient villages to explore. Wind your way past limestone cliffs, stopping to explore hidden caves or admire the stunning views.

There are numerous ancient archaeological sites to explore, too, from Phoenician and Roman cities to Bronze Age UNESCO World Heritage Sites and charming towns.

Back at sea, there’s also plenty to do. Dive into the crystal-clear waters to discover underwater caves such as the world-famous Grotta di Nereo or the ancient underwater ruins near Pula. Or you can visit a local watersports centre to try your hand at windsurfing or kite surfing – Sardinia is a hot spot for these sports thanks to its steady winds, particularly on the northwestern coast.

Wildlife in Sardinia

With such incredible natural beauty, much of it remote, it’s little surprise that Sardinia is home to an astonishing array of wildlife.

The waters here teem with life from colourful fish, including barracudas, to sea sponges, eels, lobsters and bottlenose dolphins.

On land, keep eyes peeled for Sardinian red deer, lizards, pink flamingos and Griffon vultures, along with many other remarkable creatures that thrive in this protected ecosystem.

Climate and Sailing Conditions in Sardinia

Sardinia benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers, making it a fantastic sailing destination year-round.

Its warm, stunningly clear waters are typically calm, with flat waters in the summer, particularly along the eastern coast. More exposed areas, such as the western coast, experience more turbulence and swell thanks to the influence of the Mistral winds.

These are northwesterly winds which are prevalent during the summer months, from May to September. More noticeable along the western and northern coasts of Sardinia, the Mistral can appear quite suddenly and blow up to 30 knots or more, resulting in some truly exhilarating sailing!

Whether you’re chasing adventure or simply seeking a peaceful getaway on the water, sailing in Sardinia is a unique experience that will leave you with memories for a lifetime with many of its hidden gems only accessible by sea.
