A Catamaran Holiday in Greece: Sailing the Saronic Islands

Aegina → Agistri → Poros → Epidavros → Methana → Hydra (wind permitting) → Aegina

The Saronic Islands sit tucked south of Athens in the shelter of the Saronic Gulf, close enough to the capital for easy access, yet remote enough to feel like a world apart. Their combination of rich history, ancient ruins, sandy beaches, and clear blue water makes them one of the most rewarding sailing grounds in Greece, and Zorba Cat is perfectly suited to exploring them at a relaxed and unhurried pace.

Your route will depend on the wind, the weather, and the wishes of everyone on board, and that flexibility is part of what makes sailing with Zorba Cat such a personal experience. Aga and Greg have been sailing these waters for years and know every anchorage, every taverna, and every quiet bay worth dropping anchor in. From afternoon swims in remote crystal-clear coves to evenings at waterfront restaurants where the fish was caught that morning, the pace of life here quickly settles into something deeply enjoyable. There is always something to do and always somewhere new to discover, but equally, there is always the option to simply lie on the cushioned bow nets and let the Mediterranean do the rest.

Aegina: Pistachio Island & Ancient Wonders

Join Zorba Cat in Aegina, the pistachio island, with its palette of terracotta rooftops and fishing boats swaying in the harbour. Its hillsides are embroidered with olive trees and pistachio groves giving it something that the more polished Greek islands sometimes lack – authenticity, stillness, and soul. The pistachios here are considered among the finest in the world, and the waterfront stalls make it very easy to find out why.

A taxi up to the Temple of Aphaia is highly recommended. Set among pine trees with views stretching across the Saronic Gulf, the temple predates the Parthenon and forms part of a mythical triangle with the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Dating from around 500 BC, it is one of the best-preserved Doric temples in Greece and well worth the adventure. For something altogether quieter, the fishing village of Perdika on Aegina’s south coast is Aga and Greg’s favourite harbour on the island – a handful of waterfront tavernas, fresh grilled octopus, and what they describe as the nicest people in the world. Just opposite Perdika, the tiny uninhabited islet of Moni offers pristine turquoise water, peacocks, deer, and a short tender ride across.

The Saronic Islands: Poros, Agistri, Epidavros & Beyond

Beyond Aegina, the Saronic Gulf opens up a rich and varied collection of islands and mainland harbours, each with its own personality. The wind will dictate the exact route, but Aga and Greg know all the best spots and will always make the most of the conditions.

Agistri lies just a short sail from Aegina, a small, pine-covered island with clear waters and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a morning swim stop or an overnight anchorage away from the crowds. Poros offers some of the finest views in the Saronics from its hilltop clock tower, with white-washed rooftops tumbling down to a waterfront lined with tavernas that often play local music in the evenings. A narrow channel separates Poros from the Peloponnese coast, creating a beautiful stretch of sheltered water that is one of the highlights of any Saronic voyage.

On the mainland coast, the ancient theatre of Epidavros is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of classical Greek architecture in the world, still acoustically perfect after 2,500 years. Nearby, the sunken city of Epidavros offers an extraordinary snorkelling experience through submerged ancient ruins. The quiet harbour of Methana is another highlight as Aga and Greg’s friends own an authentic Greek vineyard in the hills above the port, and a vineyard tour and dinner can often be arranged for guests who wish to go ashore.

Hydra, Water Sports & Life on the Water

If the winds are favourable, Zorba Cat may sail to Hydra, which is widely considered the jewel of the Saronic Gulf, and one of Aga and Greg’s favourite places to take guests. Its ancient port is carefully lined with well-preserved stone houses rising from a history-charged harbourfront, entirely free of cars and motor vehicles. Donkeys are the only transport ashore, and the island has a timeless quality that is increasingly rare in the Mediterranean. Arriving here by catamaran, as the sun catches the stone buildings above the harbour, is one of those moments that makes a sailing holiday in Greece feel genuinely special.

Back on board, Zorba Cat’s large deck and dropped transoms make the most of Greece’s extraordinary swimming conditions. SUPs and kayaks are all available for guests who want to make the most of the clear, warm water, with two swim ladders giving easy access to the sea, spontaneous swimming stops are part of the daily rhythm. Snorkelling in the crystal-clear coves of the Saronics is rewarding throughout, and the underwater world here is rich, clear, and accessible to all ages.

Life Aboard the Luxury Catamaran Zorba Cat

Zorba Cat is a 60-foot Fountaine Pajot Eleuthera catamaran, which is one of the finest production catamarans built with charter comfort at the forefront of her design. Spacious, stable, and well-equipped, she handles the calm waters of the Saronic Gulf beautifully, and her simple rig and modern navigation equipment make her a relaxed and enjoyable sail for all abilities.

Below decks, four private ensuite cabins sleep eight guests – two master aft ensuite cabins (convertible to twins if needed) and two double forward ensuite cabins, all with push-button toilets and wet-room showers. Above decks, the generous saloon, cushioned bow nets, shaded lounging area under the boom, and alfresco dining area at the stern give guests plenty of space to relax in Mediterranean style. Breakfast and lunch are included in the ticket price, with evenings typically enjoyed ashore at the island tavernas.

  • Cabins: Four private ensuite cabins sleeping eight guests
  • Meals: Half board – breakfast and lunch included, evenings ashore
  • Sailing style: Fully crewed – relaxed and flexible, tailored to guests
  • Water sports: SUPs, kayaks and water skiing available on board
  • Booking: Available by the cabin or as a whole boat private charter
Things to note
Sailing vs shoretime
Zorba Cat will aim to spend a few hours sailing between islands in the morning/over lunch and then anchor or port for the afternoon to explore ashore and swim!
Night Watches?
No, Zorba Cat will not be running night watches.
Are there Mosquitos?
There are some in the evenings so if you're prone to getting bitten, we recommend taking a good DEET spray.

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

Please read more information on our Insurance guidelines page.

This voyage will not more than 12 miles offshore.

Catarman Zorba Cat is run by sailing couple Aga and Greg, who strive to provide an authentic sailing experience in Greece, where you can discover hidden anchorages away from tourist-heavy areas and dine in traditional Greek seaside tavernas. Whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveller, there’s something for everyone with Zorba Cat’s charters. Expect an unforgettable sailing holiday with her!

Authentic Greece

During all of Zorba Cat’s voyages, the main aim is to avoid tourist crowds and instead opt for small harbours or anchorages next to deserted islands. Each day, guests stop for a swim in beautiful bays, some of which are wild, while others have a small taverna serving fresh fish and seafood for lunch, often taken out of the water before their very eyes. Guests can jog or practice yoga in the morning, enjoy organic, healthy food on board, and experience a healthy lifestyle close to nature. Friendly locals, as well as delicious food and wine, are common features on all the islands that Zorba Cat visits.

All Zorba Cat voyages offer a perfect balance of relaxation, sightseeing and sailing! Depending on the itinerary, Aga and Greg recommend and help organise excursions to historical sites and other attractions.

A Typical Day

After a peaceful night’s rest, you can start your day by indulging in a wholesome breakfast, taking a stroll ashore and savouring a delicious cup of coffee while admiring the scenic surroundings.

Sail for a few hours each day until you arrive at a stunning bay with a deserted beach, with plenty of time to enjoy activities such as snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, exploring the island or bay, and reading books. Prepare lunch together before taking some downtime, and maybe even a little siesta or a swim before setting sail again.

Zorba Cat has stand-up paddle boards, a double kayak, water skiing, inflatables and snorkel masks for guests to use, included in the ticket price.

In the afternoon, set sail to a new location, and if you’re interested, you can learn how to steer, tie knots, and pull ropes. Alternatively, you can simply relax and sunbathe on the deck. Before the evening arrives, arrive at a new island and dock in a charming little village. In the evenings, head to a traditional Taverna to sample some fantastic local food and delicious Greek wine while enjoying live music and dancing the Zorba. “No hurry” is our motto for the night.

Food and Drink

The ticket price includes breakfast and lunch, and Aga will be your host and main chef on board Zorba Cat. However, guests are welcome to participate in all aspects of life on board and often assist with food preparation and cooking. Aga plans to go shopping on the first day so that everyone’s preferences can be considered (if guests would like to join her, they are welcome). The evening meals will mainly consist of dishes from Aga & Greg’s favourite Greek tavernas. Local cuisine, fresh fish, and seafood can be purchased at a relatively low cost.

Sleeping and Relaxation

Zorba Cat is a custom-built charter catamaran, so all her communal spaces and cabins have been well-considered and are generously proportioned.

There are two primary dining areas on the yacht – one in the spacious open saloon and the other on the stern of the deck, where you can enjoy alfresco dining under a canopy cover. You’ll find numerous spots to read a book or soak up the sun, both on the decks and across the bow nets (both areas are fully cushioned). The dropped transoms are perfect for easy access in and out of the water with swim ladders and freshwater hose showers.

Zorba Cat has two master ensuite cabins and two forward double ensuite cabins.

The Master cabins are at the rear and on either side of the catamaran with oversized standard double beds and plenty of storage and hanging space. In one of the cabins, the bed can be split into two single beds. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

On each bow of the boat, there is a double ensuite cabin complete with a double bed. The ensuite is a modern push-button flush toilet with a wet room-style shower.

Sample menu

Aga is the chef on board Zorba Cat voyage, known for serving delicious, healthy, and locally sourced meals that keep guests coming back. The ingredients are organic, with some homemade and others sourced from local markets and friends’ gardens.

Guests can also enjoy world-class pistachios from Aegina’s only local producer and award-winning wines from a local boutique winery.

Aga uses her nutrition expertise to create meals that are not only healthy but also nourishing for the soul. She accommodates various dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, while avoiding white sugar and processed ingredients. Most of the dishes are vegetarian, ensuring a wholesome dining experience on board.

We recommend a travelling-light approach with lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items. GETTING THERE
Aegina, Saronic Islands, Greece

BY AIR

Flights go direct to Athens International Airport from London Stansted with Ryanair, and London Gatwick with Wizz Air, British Airways and easyJet. You’ll then need to take a taxi from the airport to Piraeus port and take a ferry to Aegina port, which takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.

and then by Ferry…

There are many different ferry options which run throughout the day. Please use Ferry Scanner to find timetables. We recommend guests pre-book tickets (this will still require picking up a physical ticket from the kiosk on the front) as peak times can be busy.

(The Flying Dolphin and/or Hellenic offer a faster transfer than the larger Blue Star Ferry. )

Zorba’s crew can assist you with arranging an airport-to-hotel transfer to Piraeus (this is not included in the ticket price, but they have a good local contact). Please contact Aga the week before your voyage if you need this service.

Depending on berth availability, Zorba Cat will either be in Aegina port (a 2-minute walk from the ferry) or Perdika (just along the coast). If the boat is in Perdika, Aga will arrange for a taxi (€15pp) to pick you up at Aegina port and take you to Perdika.
