Not for the faint-hearted, sailing in South America is guaranteed to be a life-changing experience. Hands-on sailing in wild seas, tranquil moments spent surrounded by total wilderness, encounters with rare wildlife, all in this exceptional, yet often forgotten, corner of our planet.
Sail with expedition boat Tecla
Antarctica is a dream destination for many adventurers, having been the object of numerous historic expeditions. Expedition boat, Tecla, is one of the few traditionally rigged sailing boats that offers voyages to Antarctica and she is well-equipped to navigate the wild and icy shores of the continent. With her steel hull and experienced crew, Tecla provides a safe and sustainable way to explore this remarkably beautiful and endlessly white wilderness.
Tecla embarks on two voyages every year, sailing from South America across Drake’s Passage, typically spending 7-10 days exploring the icy coast as part of a longer voyage that includes the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island. During the voyage, you will have the opportunity to get up close to some of the world’s largest colonies of penguins, sail past fascinating icebergs, and hopefully spot some whales along the way.
Sailing in Chile
The Republic of Chile is the southernmost country in the world and boasts over 6000 miles of Pacific Coastline. Whilst the north of the country is known for its dry deserts, the south is a land of ice, mountains, lakes and volcanoes, best explored from the water. The landscapes here are jaw-droppingly beautiful, huge mountains tower alongside vast lakes which look like inland oceans. This vastness offers up a blissful peace which is best absorbed from Tecla’s sturdy deck as she glides silently across the waters. Enjoy outstanding wildlife watching opportunities as you travel, from dolphins and whales to guanacos, Andean condors and even the elusive puma.
Step ashore and experience the eclectic and colourful Chilean culture, which is famous around the world. Wander through traditional markets to the steady sound of drums and lively music, surrounded by vibrantly clothed, welcoming locals. Dine on fresh seafood, breathe in fresh cool air and take a moment to appreciate standing at the tip of the world.
Sailing in Patagonia
Divided by the impressive Andes mountains, the region of Patagonia spans across the southern tip of Chile and Argentina and is jointly governed by each country. Astonishingly pretty, Patagonia is an adventurer’s paradise offering up rugged coastlines which border barren landscapes. Hospitable harbours here are few and far between, making Patagonia ideal for those seeking to experience expedition sailing. Travelling through wilderness, guests can soak up the solitude, with often only fellow crew and penguins for company.
With fresh mountain air, crystal clear waters, pulse-racing conditions and impressive scenery, sailing in Patagonia offers something you won’t find anywhere else.
Sailing in the Falklands
This Atlantic archipelago has a diverse history, not often featuring on many holiday lists. However island-hopping here is a wonderful way to experience the islands to their fullest, taking in the diverse wildlife and gorgeous landscapes as well as learning more about their people. The Falkland Islands are home to wildlife sanctuaries and serve as vital breeding grounds for albatross, seals, penguins and sea lions. Further out to sea, the nutrient-rich waters are teeming with numerous whale species as well as dolphins, seals and sea lions, each darting about in the vibrant turquoise waters.
Back on land, experience life in the middle of nowhere as you explore small towns and meet the proud locals who call the Falkland Islands home, many of whom were bred and brought up here. Learn more about their unique way of life, pay tribute to their rocky history and celebrate their fascinating culture.
A sailing holiday with Tecla is the chance to truly experience expedition sailing as she traverses the globe. Join her in South America for the chance to travel to inaccessible places, through undisturbed lands where many have never ventured before.
