South America sailing aboard Sea Dragon, an ocean-rated expedition yacht, from La Paz, Mexico south along the Pacific coast to Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica.
South America sailing aboard expedition yacht Sea Dragon begins in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez and ends on the tropical Pacific coast of Costa Rica, covering more than 2,000 nautical miles of open ocean over eighteen days. Departing La Paz, Sea Dragon heads south through the gulf before transitioning into the open Pacific. Watch rotations, weather routing discussions, and steady southward progress define the days, and the changing coastline of Mexico and Central America passes to port as the tropics deepen around you.

A South America Sailing Adventure from Mexico to Costa Rica
La Paz, Mexico → Pacific Coast of Mexico → Central America → Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica
South America sailing on this passage begins with the familiar warmth of the Sea of Cortez and ends somewhere altogether more tropical. Departing La Paz, Sea Dragon exits the gulf and turns south into the open Pacific, where the conditions change quickly and meaningfully. The sheltered waters of Baja give way to long ocean swells rolling up from the south, and the passage settles into the rhythm that defines extended offshore sailing: watch rotations running around the clock, meals shared in the galley, weather routing discussed at the chart table, and the slow, steady accumulation of miles.
Over eighteen days, more than 2,000 nautical miles of Pacific coastline pass beneath Sea Dragon’s keel. Mexico’s Pacific shore gives way to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua before the lush green hills of Costa Rica begin to rise ahead. The Intertropical Convergence Zone sits across this passage, and crossing it brings its own character: shifting winds, dramatic convective squalls, and the kind of tropical weather that requires constant attention and rewards it. The crew will route around the worst of it where possible, but the ITCZ is part of the Pacific and part of the passage, and learning to read and sail through its conditions is one of the most valuable lessons this voyage offers.
Bluewater Miles and Offshore Experience
This is extended offshore passage-making, and every guest aboard Sea Dragon is expected to be fully engaged throughout. The watch system runs from departure to arrival, eighteen days without interruption, and the depth of experience accumulated over that time is something that simply cannot be replicated on a shorter voyage:
- Stand full offshore watch rotations including night watches throughout the passage
- Gain experience in long-distance passage-making across varied ocean conditions
- Practice weather interpretation and take part in daily routing discussions
- Build over 2,000 nautical miles of bluewater sailing toward any offshore qualification
- Experience a tropical landfall on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica
The time between watches is entirely your own. Sleep, read, fish off the stern, or simply sit on deck and watch the ocean.
Arrival: Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica
Playa Flamingo sits on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, a sheltered bay backed by the lush tropical hills of Guanacaste. After eighteen days at sea, arriving here is a landfall with real weight. The air is warm and thick with humidity, the vegetation along the shore is the deep green of the tropics, and the contrast with the open Pacific miles behind you could hardly be more complete. Costa Rica has a long relationship with the sea, and the sailing community here is welcoming and well established. Playa Flamingo offers a natural harbour, easy provisioning, and all the warmth of a tropical Pacific landfall that has been earned, mile by mile, from the Sea of Cortez.

GETTING INVOLVED
Life aboard Sea Dragon is a true offshore sailing adventure. As a working expedition vessel, everyone on board becomes part of the crew, encouraged to get involved in all aspects of life at sea. You’ll take part in helming, navigation, sail handling, keeping lookout, and the shared routines of cooking and maintaining the boat.
No prior experience is required, just a willingness to get involved and a love for adventure. Under the guidance of a professional skipper and crew, you’ll build practical skills and confidence. Days are shaped by a watch system that balances time on duty with time to rest, reflect, or simply take in the vastness of the ocean. When at anchor or in port, the focus shifts to exploration, with opportunities to swim, snorkel, hike, or step ashore and connect with the places we visit.
A TYPICAL DAY
No two days are the same on an expedition, but a steady rhythm quickly forms. At sea, your day is shaped by the watch system with periods of helming, trimming sails, or keeping lookout, balanced with time to rest, read, or connect with your fellow crew.
At anchor or in port, the pace softens. Days are guided by location and conditions, with time set aside for exploration. Whether that’s snorkelling reefs, hiking coastal trails, or simply enjoying life ashore between shared meals.
SLEEPING AND RELAXATION
Rest is essential to life at sea, and Sea Dragon offers a comfortable, practical space to recharge. Each guest has their own bunk within a shared cabin, along with a personal storage area. The accommodation is simple but thoughtfully designed for offshore living.
Off-watch time is yours to enjoy. You might stretch out with a book, share stories in the saloon, or sit quietly on deck underneath a star-lit sky. The experience invites you to slow down and disconnect from daily routines, replacing them with the ocean’s natural rhythm.
EATING ABOARD
Meals are cooked on board with an emphasis on fresh, wholesome ingredients and flavours inspired by the regions we sail through. When conditions allow, locally sourced produce and the occasional fresh catch bring a sense of place to the table.
Lunch and dinner are a time to come together, reflect on the day, and enjoy good food in good company. Breakfast is more flexible, with freshly ground coffee or loose-leaf tea easing you into the morning. Everyone plays a part in galley life, from meal preparation to washing up. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
