Sailing the Faroe Islands means beginning in one of the most extraordinary places in Europe. The cliffs here are among the highest sea cliffs in the world, rising up to 800 metres above the churning Atlantic, where seabirds teeter precariously before plummeting down into the dark water below. The archipelago is raw, atmospheric and largely untouched. Departing Tórshavn, Sea Dragon heads south, leaving the basalt cliffs and deep fjords of the Faroes behind as she points her bow towards Scotland.

The passage south is Faroe Islands sailing at its finest. Think stretches of open water, shifting North Atlantic weather and a growing sense of the Scottish coast ahead. As the Hebrides come into view, the character of the sailing changes. The island-strewn waters of Scotland’s west coast offer shelter, exploration and some of the most memorable anchorages in European sailing. Sea Dragon threads her way through this extraordinary archipelago before making her final approach to Oban, famous for its natural beauty, rich history and its historic distillery which has been producing single malt Scotch whisky since 1794.

Sailing to Scotland Through the Hebrides

The Hebrides are a reward in themselves. Between the Faroe Islands and Oban lies a coastline of sea lochs, remote islands, wildlife-rich headlands and small coastal communities that have looked out over these waters for centuries. Sea Dragon’s route takes advantage of the natural shelter the islands provide, with opportunities to anchor in quiet bays and go ashore in places rarely reached by those who travel by land.

Sailing to Scotland this way is one of the great pleasures of offshore passage-making. You’ll also get to:

An Ocean Expedition 

Sea Dragon is a modern expedition yacht built to MCA Category 0 – the highest offshore classification, cleared for all oceans. She offers hands-on, immersive sailing where every guest is an active crew member. She is equally welcoming to curious beginners and experienced sailors looking for a genuine offshore challenge.

Below deck, Sea Dragon accommodates up to 12 guests in single berths, with a spacious saloon, two heads with showers and a well-equipped galley. Heating and air-conditioning keep things comfortable, whatever the climate. On deck, she carries modern Furuno navigation and satellite communications, a full offshore sail plan including storm sails and an asymmetric spinnaker, and stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear for moments when the anchor goes down.

Meals aboard are a shared effort. The galley philosophy is inspired by the places Sea Dragon sails. Think fresh, local and seasonal wherever possible. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
