UK Sailing Expedition – Scotland to Portsmouth
Oban, Scotland → Hebrides → Irish Sea → English Channel → Portsmouth, England
This sailing expedition begins in Oban, Scotland’s gateway to the Isles, and heads straight into some of the finest cruising waters in Europe. The west coast of Scotland offers panoramic landscapes at every turn, with ancient woodlands lining mountains that plunge straight into the sea, miles of coast to discover, secret coves for picturesque anchorages and uninhabited islands for walking trails ashore. Sea Dragon picks her way south through the Hebrides, taking advantage of the natural shelter the islands provide while keeping open water always within reach for those longer offshore legs.
Scotland’s waters are rich in marine wildlife, so keep an eye out for seals, dolphins, basking sharks and whales, and soaring above you, both golden and sea eagles hunting, especially around Mull and Islay. As the voyage progresses south, the landscape gradually softens with the rugged drama of the Highlands giving way to the rolling coastlines of the Irish Sea and eventually the gentler waters of the English Channel. This is UK sailing at its most varied, and no two days look the same.
A Sailing Expedition Through the Best of Britain
The route south offers a remarkable mix of landscapes, sailing conditions and places to explore. From the Scottish Highlands to the south coast of England, this sailing expedition passes through some of Britain’s most celebrated waters. Highlights along the way may include:
- The Hebrides – a labyrinth of islands, sea lochs and sheltered anchorages; home to white-tailed eagles, otters, puffins and abundant marine life
- The Irish Sea for open water sailing, with a shift in pace and weather as Sea Dragon makes her way south
- Cornwall’s South Coast – rounding Land’s End, the rugged cliffs and hidden coves of Cornwall’s south coast offer some of England’s most rewarding coastal sailing, with charming harbour towns like Falmouth or Fowey providing perfect stops before heading east along the English Channel
- Portsmouth is the UK’s premier destination for exploring 500 years of naval history, home to HMS Victory, the Mary Rose

GETTING INVOLVED
Life aboard Sea Dragon is a true offshore sailing adventure. As a working expedition vessel, everyone on board becomes part of the crew, encouraged to get involved in all aspects of life at sea. You’ll take part in helming, navigation, sail handling, keeping lookout, and the shared routines of cooking and maintaining the boat.
No prior experience is required, just a willingness to get involved and a love for adventure. Under the guidance of a professional skipper and crew, you’ll build practical skills and confidence. Days are shaped by a watch system that balances time on duty with time to rest, reflect, or simply take in the vastness of the ocean. When at anchor or in port, the focus shifts to exploration, with opportunities to swim, snorkel, hike, or step ashore and connect with the places we visit.
A TYPICAL DAY
No two days are the same on an expedition, but a steady rhythm quickly forms. At sea, your day is shaped by the watch system with periods of helming, trimming sails, or keeping lookout, balanced with time to rest, read, or connect with your fellow crew.
At anchor or in port, the pace softens. Days are guided by location and conditions, with time set aside for exploration. Whether that’s snorkelling reefs, hiking coastal trails, or simply enjoying life ashore between shared meals.
SLEEPING AND RELAXATION
Rest is essential to life at sea, and Sea Dragon offers a comfortable, practical space to recharge. Each guest has their own bunk within a shared cabin, along with a personal storage area. The accommodation is simple but thoughtfully designed for offshore living.
Off-watch time is yours to enjoy. You might stretch out with a book, share stories in the saloon, or sit quietly on deck underneath a star-lit sky. The experience invites you to slow down and disconnect from daily routines, replacing them with the ocean’s natural rhythm.
EATING ABOARD
Meals are cooked on board with an emphasis on fresh, wholesome ingredients and flavours inspired by the regions we sail through. When conditions allow, locally sourced produce and the occasional fresh catch bring a sense of place to the table.
Lunch and dinner are a time to come together, reflect on the day, and enjoy good food in good company. Breakfast is more flexible, with freshly ground coffee or loose-leaf tea easing you into the morning. Everyone plays a part in galley life, from meal preparation to washing up. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.
