A Skippered Sailing Holiday in the Saronic Islands
Athens (Piraeus) → Aegina → Agistri → Poros → Hydra → Epidavros → Athens (Piraeus)
A Greek island sailing holiday with Zorba is as relaxed or as hands-on as you’d like it to be. Each morning you’ll wake in a new harbour, and each evening you’ll sit down to fresh-caught fish and local wine at a waterfront taverna. In between, the Saronic Islands unfold at their own pace with remote anchorages, ancient hillside towns, and stretches of clear water made for swimming. Your route is never fixed as it takes shape around the wind, the weather, and the mood on board. That flexibility is part of what makes sailing here so rewarding.
The Saronic Islands sit just an hour from Athens, making them one of the most accessible sailing destinations in Greece. Despite their proximity to the capital, many of the smaller islands and coves feel entirely removed from modern life. The archipelago includes the inhabited islands of Aegina, Agistri, Poros and Hydra, as well as quieter spots and uninhabited anchorages seldom visited by those who travel by land.
Greek Island Sailing Holiday Highlights
The Saronic Islands reward curious exploration. Here are some of the highlights you might encounter along the way:
- Hydra – the jewel of the Saronic, with no cars, no noise, and a beautifully preserved harbour ringed by stone houses. Donkeys do the heavy lifting here.
- Aegina – famous for its pistachios, its impressive Temple of Aphaia and the quiet fishing village of Perdika, where Zorba’s skippers will tell you the warmest people in Greece can be found.
- Epidavros – a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the eastern Peloponnese coast, home to an ancient theatre of remarkable acoustics and the ruins of the Sanctuary of Asclepius. The bay also hides a sunken city, perfect for shallow snorkelling over old foundations and ancient pottery.
- Cape Sounion – the Temple of Poseidon perches on the southernmost tip of mainland Greece, towers over the anchorage, and makes for a memorable sail in its own right.
- Hidden anchorages – the Saronics are dotted with uninhabited islands and quiet coves. Some of the best moments happen well off the tourist trail.

“No hurry…” is the motto that Zorba sails by…
…from hidden anchorages away from the tourist hustle and bustle to traditionally Greek seaside tavernas, Zorba truly offers guests an unforgettable, authentic sailing holiday in Greece. From family-friendly charters to voyages for couples and solo travellers alike, Zorba certainly has something for everyone.
Authentic Greece
During all of Zorba’s voyages, the aim is to stay far away from tourist crowds – instead choosing the small harbours or anchorages next to desert islands. Each day, guests stop for swimming in beautiful bays – some of them wild, others with one small taverna, serving lunch: fresh fish and seafood (often taken out of the water before our eyes). There is always the possibility of jogging/yoga in the morning, organic, healthy food on board and a healthy lifestyle close to nature. Friendly local people and lots of tasty food and wine are common features across all the islands Zorba visits. Zorba’s owners, Aga and Greg, also have a great connection with an authentic Greek Vineyard near Methana, and their crew can arrange for a tour and dinner for guests who wish.
All of Zorba’s voyages offer the perfect balance of relaxation, sightseeing and of course, sailing! Depending on the itinerary, Aga and Greg always recommend and organise excursions to the historical sites or other places worth visiting.
A Typical Day
Wake up, eat breakfast, have some coffee in the village or take a little walk to stretch the legs before we sail away.
Sail for a few hours each day before reaching a beautiful bay with a deserted beach. There is plenty of time for snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, exploring the island/bay, reading books and general relaxation! Together, prepare lunch (Greek salad seems perfect for the hot day!) and have some downtime – maybe even a little siesta.
Spend the afternoon sailing before the evening comes, and you reach a new island, moor in a lovely small village and explore the new place (they say sunset in Hydra is even better than in Santorini!) As a rule of thumb, in the evening, everyone will go to a traditional Taverna to try some excellent local food and the delicious Greek wine, dance the Zorba, listen to live music, and relax!
Getting Involved
Your sailing holiday in Greece is truly as you make it. Zorba is a fun and simple boat to sail, and the skipper can sail it alone if guests prefer a more relaxing experience. That said, the larger Saronic Gulf offers great sailing conditions for those wanting to learn the ropes in a safe, supported environment. The skipper has many years of experience sailing here, so he loves to share his knowledge and skills with guests. From knot tying to basic navigation, taking the helm and reading the local charts, guests are welcome to get involved as much or as little as they’d like.
Sample menu
Please note that this is an example of what you may be served. Agata will be your host and main chef, although guests tend to get involved in all aspects of life on board Zorba. GETTING THERE
Aegina, Saronic Islands, Greece
BY AIR
Flights go direct to Athens International Airport from London Stansted with Ryanair, and London Gatwick with Wizz Air, British Airways and easyJet. You’ll then need to take a taxi from the airport to Piraeus port and take a ferry to Aegina port, which takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour.
and then by Ferry…
There are many different ferry options which run throughout the day. Please use Ferry Scanner to find timetables. We recommend guests pre-book tickets (this will still require picking up a physical ticket from the kiosk on the front) as peak times can be busy.
(The Flying Dolphin and/or Hellenic offer a faster transfer than the larger Blue Star Ferry. )
Zorba’s crew can assist you in arranging an airport/hotel transfer to take you to Piraeus (this is not included in the ticket price, but they have a good local contact). Please contact Aga the week before your voyage if you need this service.
Depending on berth availability, Zorba will either be in Aegina port (a 2-minute walk from the ferry) or Perdika (just along the coast). If the boat is in Perdika, Aga will arrange for a taxi to pick you up at Aegina port and take you to Perdika.
