Sailing the Firth of Clyde — Island Harbours and Open Water

Inverkip → Isle of Cumbrae → Loch Fyne → Arran → Campbeltown → Inverkip

This Scottish short break begins and ends in Inverkip, a well-protected harbour in the Firth of Clyde. Easily accessible by road and train from Glasgow, the marina sits close to sheltered sailing waters. The Clyde here is wide and calm, framed by wooded hills and low mountains, with clear navigation and plenty of space to settle into Noonmark VI’s responsive helm and rig.

From Inverkip, the route remains flexible, with likely stops including the Isle of Cumbrae, Loch Fyne, Arran and Campbeltown. Each offers a distinct coastal character, within comfortable day-sailing distance of the others. The Isle of Cumbrae offers an easy first landfall, with gentle shoreline walks and long views across the Clyde.

Loch Fyne, Arran and Campbeltown

Loch Fyne opens into a sheltered landscape of quiet bays and a welcoming marina at Portavadie, where guests can go ashore for a wander, a coffee or a swim. The shoreside restaurant and spa make it an easy place to spend a few hours.

Arran is a highlight of this voyage. Goatfell is visible on a clear day as you approach the anchorage of Loch Ranza on the island’s north-west side – a quiet place to stretch your legs, with gentle walking routes directly from the shore. Red deer graze nearby, so expect some four-legged company ashore.

Further south, Campbeltown sits at the end of the Kintyre peninsula with a lived-in harbour atmosphere and views across the loch. Once known as the whisky capital of the world, the town is still home to a small number of historic distilleries and a proud local whisky-making tradition. It’s a friendly place to walk ashore, with a sense of everyday West Coast life that feels genuine rather than polished.

Wildlife on the Firth of Clyde

Wildlife spotting is one of the quiet rewards of sailing in Scotland. It is common to see seals resting on the rocks and gannets plunging into the water. The occasional porpoise or dolphin appears without warning, moving alongside or through the wake before slipping back into the deep. Minke whales are the most commonly encountered, while humpbacks are rarer.

Birdlife is varied throughout the islands:

• Puffins, razorbills and guillemots gather offshore during summer
• Cormorants and shags dry their wings on the rocks
• White-tailed eagles can sometimes be spotted circling over the lochs and higher ground

In quieter anchorages, red deer sometimes move across the hills in the early morning or last light of the day. Curious otters slip along the tideline, rewarding patient watchers. Sightings are never guaranteed, but time on the water and varied anchorages offer good opportunities throughout the voyage.

A Modern Yacht in Remote Waters

Noonmark VI is a modern offshore cruiser-racer that has sailed the world and competed in many prestigious events. She is now owned and skippered by Iain Forsyth, a Scotsman from the West Coast who has sailed these waters all his life.

Guests are actively encouraged to get involved, with plenty of opportunities to help set sails, helm, and plan passages. Alternatively, sit back and enjoy the view as she cuts through the water at a good, and sometimes exhilarating, cruising speed.
