YOUR SAILING AREA

Spain & Portugal

La Coruña town’s history is closely connected with its historic fishing and trading port, and the peninsula on which the historic part of town is situated is home to an interesting Romanesque road network with squares and medieval churches as well as the Hercules Tower, the oldest lighthouse in the world. The Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Goya and others on display, is also worth a visit.

From La Coruna in the north,  Blue Clipper will cruise along the spectacular coastline of Portugal. The sailing will mostly be made by day, however, there may be an opportunity for an overnight sail down the coast. As you make your way down, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore stunning locations such as Muros. A seafront town lined with ancient granite-paved streets, traditional Spanish markets and bustling taverns.

Exactly where you will stop will depend on the weather and wind. Sail and explore the beautiful Iles Cies situated in the mouth of the River Vigo and now a designated National Park teeming with birdlife. Anchor in its picturesque sheltered coves and swim in its glistening clear waters to the stretches of sandy white beaches. Follow the walking trails as they meander higher amongst the tree before reaching Mount Faro – a fabulous point offering spectacular panoramic views.

Read more about sailing in the Rias Baixas here.

Continue sailing south as you cross the invisible ocean border between Spain and Portugal and visit the bustling cities of Porto-lined with colourful merchant houses along narrow cobbled streets, and the capital of Lisbon with its ancient history and maritime heritage.  The final harbour of Portimao is traditionally known for its shipbuilding and sardine fishing. With easy access out of Portugal, Portimao is the second largest city in the Algarve region.

Things to note
SAILING VS SHORETIME
On standard coastal sailings, Blue Clipper will spend a few hours sailing before making time to explore ashore. On expedition sailings, there may be consecutive days on the water.
NIGHT WATCHES?
Guests are welcomed to get involved with all aspects of sailing. It is not mandatory but we believe it's part of the magic of being on the water! There will be a relaxed watch system running throughout the voyage.

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

Please read more information on our Insurance guidelines page.

This voyage will be more than 12 miles offshore.

Blue Clipper

Guest berths: 12 Rig: Gaff Schooner

Tall ship Blue Clipper has spent many years sailing all over the world and currently spends her summers sailing Scotland and the Hebrides, her autumn months heading south to Spain and Portugal, then setting sail across the Atlantic for some winter sun in the Caribbean.

Built in Sweden in 1991, tall ship Blue Clipper is an impressive three-masted gaff rig schooner. With a clipper bow, original teak deck and elegant stern, she mixes a traditional tall ship feel with a relatively modern build, giving guests an authentic experience with all the mod cons.

On deck, she boasts ample space for her guests to become fully immersed in hands-on sailing, heaving the ropes, hoisting the sails, learning ropes skills, and even taking the helm. She has three kayaks and three paddle boards for guest use while on anchor, so you can explore even further inshore.

She offers voyages to suit all ages and abilities. From taster sailing breaks to week-long explorations in the Hebrides, she also takes those looking for something a little more adventurous across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. From the mystical, moody Scotland to the warm winter sun in the Caribbean, the crew aboard are on permanent rotation, so you’ll be in safe hands whichever voyage you choose.

A spacious saloon, wheelhouse and galley also sit at deck level, while below decks have been well-considered with six spacious ensuite cabins. All cabins have full-size bunks, a small desk, a porthole for natural light and heating/air conditioning.
