Bessie Ellen is a traditionally rigged tall ship with a full-time professional skipper and crew. She will make the best use of the wind available, keeping her movement as sustainable and quiet as possible to ensure respect for the surrounding wildlife at all times. The Isle of Mull is renowned for its abundant wildlife-watching opportunities and is home to the iconic harbourside village of Tobermory, where quaint, colourful houses line the waterfront.

The Treshnish Isles sit just off the North Westerly side of Mull and are fantastic for remote star-lit anchorages away from the tourist hustle and bustle. Anchor up and take the tender ashore as you sit amongst the “sea parrots” (puffins!) or try your best singing voice in the echoing basalt columns of Fingals Cave on Staffa.

This voyage is perfect for those wanting to experience tall ship sailing for the first time and are looking to try something new in a safe and supported environment. The main focus will be to explore the coastline of the Isle of Mull and perhaps the Small Isles, depending on the wind. Once you have boarded, your skipper will have the latest weather forecast and a better idea of what you can expect from your sailing holiday in Scotland. The Small Isles

Made up of four main islands, The Small Isles are a geological wonder, with each island varying vastly from the next. Rum is a National Nature Reserve and the largest island, home to the architecturally remarkable Kinloch Castle and some incredible wildlife. The island’s most famous residents are sea eagles (re-introduced in the 1980s), red deer and the hardy Rum ponies. Eigg is the most populated but still only has under 100 residents and is the most welcoming of the Small Isles. Offering Britain’s most giant pitchstone ridge, eagles soaring over stunning white beaches, and the world’s first fully renewable electricity grid, we’re sure you’ll love Eigg as much as its locals.

Muck is the smallest and most southerly island. Its low-lying, mostly treeless landscape offers dramatic perspectives and panoramic views of sandy beaches and rocky shorelines. Watch out for the Golden Eagles! Canna, looked after by the National Trust since 1981, is one of the prettier islands. With its high basalt cliffs and dramatic volcanic landscapes, the views here are breathtaking. You might even be lucky to see Minke Whales from the high cliffs, soaring Sea Eagles and nesting Puffins.

Wildlife in the Hebrides

A sailing holiday in Scotland comes with guaranteed wildlife watching, and not a week passes without seeing at least three of the Big Five – Red Deer, Otter, Seal, Golden Eagle and, of course, the Red Squirrel. It is possible to stand amongst puffin burrows whilst watching the to-ing and fro-ing of the parent birds as they feed their young with mouths full of eels. Whales and dolphins are often seen north of Colonsay and Canna, mostly Minke, but Orca have also been known to visit these waters, so keep those eyes peeled!

Getting Involved

The crew actively encourage guests to get involved with all aspects of sailing on a traditional vessel – it is an all-hands-on-deck attitude. This all-hands-on-deck approach ensures an engaging and inclusive experience for everyone. Even if you have no sailing experience, the crew’s expertise and guidance will have you hoisting sails, taking the helm in open waters, mastering essential rope work, and even picking up some navigation skills. Bessie Ellen welcomes adventurers of all backgrounds, provided they love adventure and the natural world!

The other important crew member is ship dog Bracken! A small border terrier who is well-versed in life on board, he loves watching for dolphins, exploring ashore and sleeping while under sail.

Sleeping and relaxation

Below decks, guests are indulged in a spacious saloon with original wooden beams, comfy open bunks and two toilet/wet rooms where you’d be forgiven for forgetting that you were even on a boat! Each bunk has a light, complete bedding and a privacy curtain. A tiny galley sits tucked mid-ships, and you will be in awe and wonder at the meals that come out of this space. Meals are often eaten up on deck during the day, and by evening, everyone retires to the cosy saloon to feast after a day on the water. 

Nikki is a competent skipper and an incredible cook using locally sourced produce everywhere possible.

Bessie Ellen

Bessie Ellen has limited space for possessions, so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. Each bunk is allocated a storage chest to store your items, but there is no storage for rigid cases, so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those who have sailed before may have their preferences!

• Fingerless gloves for hoisting sails (sailing or cycling are best)
• Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
• Please consider waterproof sailing boots OR clean farmer’s wellies!
• Wash towel
• Flip-flops or crocs for wet room showering
• Swimsuit and swim towel (optional) 
• Lightweight, quick-dry clothes (base layers, fleece and synthetic tops are lightweight and quick-drying!)

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea, so please bring many layers, even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

• Warm, windproof and waterproof coat and trousers. (There are some emergency oilskins, but these are not permitted to be taken off the boat)
• Sun cream (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Sunglasses and a warm hat/cap
• Refillable water bottle
• Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
• Camera/binoculars 
• Personal wash kit (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Smidge’ midge repellent – only necessary when sailing in Scotland
• Each bunk berth has a privacy curtain, so we advise sleep masks and/or earplugs!
• Charging cables for personal devices (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices)
• An good book to read!
• Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

• Are all meals included?

  Yes, all meals on board are included in the price. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Yes, please let us know at the time of enquiry.

• Are there any added extras?

  There's an honesty bar for soft drinks and alcohol.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  There are 12 comfortable berths in the former cargo hold. This is an open plan area that is also used for meals and relaxing. Each bunk has its own reading light and privacy curtain.

• Is there a porthole in my berth?

  There are portholes within the saloon for natural light but not in each berth.

• How many toilets/showers does she have?

  Bessie Ellen has two toilets/showers for guests.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All your bedding (duvet and pillow) is provided but please bring your own towels (washing and/or swimming).

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  No, Bessie does not have laundry facilities on board.

• Is there heating on board?

  Yes there is heating if needed!

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but are welcomed by the crew!

• What language is spoken on board?

  English.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from the modern tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan if needed.

• Can I charge my phone or camera?

  Yes. We run generators every day in the morning and evening, which run the 240 volt system of normal 3 pin sockets.

• What is the currency on board?

  GBP - Pounds Sterling.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Bessie Ellen is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up the boats step ladder over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are waterproofs available?

  No. Please bring your own. There are a few oilskins spare for emergencies only.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  Not at all. We give everyone who joins us on board the choice to do as much or as little as they like, whether the know how to or not.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  No.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are worried to take some medication 24 hours before travelling.

• Is there an age limit?

  No, but we advise over 16's for scheduled voyages as there is an open saloon sleeping arrangement. There is no limit for private charter.

Getting There

PARKING

There is ample parking in Oban if you arrive by car. Secure parking can be found at MacQueen Bros, or you could try the Tesco carpark and pa24-hour4 hour parking on arrival using the Your Parking Space app.

BY RAIL

Oban station is a 5-10 minute walk from North Pier. Trains run six times daily to Glasgow Queen Street Station, where there are good travel links to the rest of the UK.

BY AIR:

Glasgow and Edinburgh Airport require a train from Oban, which takes approximately 2-3hours. Flights go directly to Stansted Airport.
