The Outer Hebrides offers some of the UK’s most breathtaking and fascinating sailing grounds. Think remote anchorages where mountains run straight into the sea, miles of atmospheric landscapes, secret coves and uninhabited islands for walking trails ashore.

The main focus of this adventure sailing holiday is to reach the Outer Hebridean islands. As long as the weather is favourable, Bessie Ellen will make the 45-mile crossing to the far-flung archipelago of St Kilda. The wind and weather will determine your route and destination, so it is never 100% guaranteed that St Kilda will be reached.

Nikki has spent years sailing the Hebrides, so she knows the best places to explore ashore, swim off the boat and take in the clearest starry skies. Relax in sheltered anchorages and watch picturesque sunsets, and if we are blessed with dark skies, the stargazing from the deck is breathtaking.

The ENCHANTED ISLES

Sailing in the Outer Hebrides, possible anchorages include Eriskay, Barra Head, Mingulay, Vatersay, Taransay, the Monach Islands and the UNESCO site of St Kilda.

St Kilda

If the weather permits, venture further into the Atlantic and cross to the uninhabited islands of St Kilda.

St. Kilda, also a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Atlantic, sits 45 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. This isolated and volcanic archipelago was once home to Britain’s most isolated community. The history of the people, its inaccessibility and fantastic wildlife make the islands an exceptionally desirable destination for anyone interested in natural history.

Due to weather and swell conditions, sailing to St Kilda is never a guaranteed destination; however, if both are favourable, Bessie Ellen will sail overnight to arrive in Village Bay early. On landing, guests can walk around the abandoned village before taking a more energetic climb to the edge of the steepest cliffs in Britain, passing hundreds of small stone huts known as cleits for storing the Guga. Rare Soay sheep roam here, a primitive breed of today’s domestic sheep.

WONDERFUL WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS

A sailing holiday in Scotland comes with guaranteed wildlife watching, and not a week passes without seeing at least three of the Big Five – Red Deer, Otter, Seal, Golden Eagle and, of course, the Red Squirrel. It is possible to stand amongst puffin burrows whilst watching the to-ing and fro-ing of the parent birds as they feed their young with mouths full of eels. Whales and dolphins are often seen north of Colonsay and Canna, mostly Minke, but Orca have also been known to visit these waters, so keep those eyes peeled!

Getting Involved

The crew actively encourage guests to get involved with all aspects of sailing on a traditional vessel – it is an all-hands-on-deck attitude. This all-hands-on-deck approach ensures an engaging and inclusive experience for everyone. Even if you have no sailing experience, the crew’s expertise and guidance will have you hoisting sails, taking the helm in open waters, mastering essential rope work, and even picking up some navigation skills. Bessie Ellen welcomes adventurers of all backgrounds, provided they love adventure and the natural world!

The other important crew member is ship dog Bracken! A small border terrier well-versed in life on board, he loves watching for dolphins, exploring ashore and sleeping under sail.

Sleeping and relaxation

Below decks, guests are indulged in a spacious saloon with original wooden beams, comfy open bunks and two toilet/wet rooms where you’d be forgiven for forgetting that you were even on a boat! Each bunk has a light, complete bedding and a privacy curtain. A tiny galley sits tucked mid-ships, and you will be in awe and wonder at the meals that come out of this space. Meals are often eaten up on deck during the day, and by evening, everyone retires to the cosy saloon to feast after a day on the water. 

Nikki is a competent skipper and an incredible cook using locally sourced produce everywhere possible.

Bessie Ellen

Bessie Ellen has limited space for possessions, so please be considerate and travel as light as possible. Each bunk is allocated a storage chest to store your items, but there is no storage for rigid cases, so please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy-drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items; these are not mandatory, and those who have sailed before may have their preferences!

• Fingerless gloves for hoisting sails (sailing or cycling are best)
• Walking boots/shoes for onshore & light shoes/trainers (with good grip)
• Please consider waterproof sailing boots OR clean farmer’s wellies!
• Wash towel
• Flip-flops or crocs for wet room showering
• Swimsuit and swim towel (optional) 
• Lightweight, quick-dry clothes (base layers, fleece and synthetic tops are lightweight and quick-drying!)

It can be quite a few degrees colder out at sea, so please bring many layers, even if the forecast seems like a warm week!

• Warm, windproof and waterproof coat and trousers. (There are some emergency oilskins, but these are not permitted to be taken off the boat)
• Sun cream (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Sunglasses and a warm hat/cap
• Refillable water bottle
• Small personal first aid kit and any medication you may need
• Camera/binoculars 
• Personal wash kit (please use reef-safe, eco products where possible)
• Smidge’ midge repellent – only necessary when sailing in Scotland
• Each bunk berth has a privacy curtain, so we advise sleep masks and/or earplugs!
• Charging cables for personal devices (there are 12v USB sockets to charge devices)
• A good book to read!
• Consider a small backpack/bag for onshore exploring

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance, which would cover you between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

• Are all meals included?

  Yes, all meals on board are included in the price. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Yes, please let us know at the time of enquiry.

• Are there any added extras?

  There's an honesty bar for soft drinks and alcohol.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  There are 12 comfortable berths in the former cargo hold. This is an open plan area that is also used for meals and relaxing. Each bunk has its own reading light and privacy curtain.

• Is there a porthole in my berth?

  There are portholes within the saloon for natural light but not in each berth.

• How many toilets/showers does she have?

  Bessie Ellen has two toilets/showers for guests.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All your bedding (duvet and pillow) is provided but please bring your own towels (washing and/or swimming).

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  No, Bessie does not have laundry facilities on board.

• Is there heating on board?

  Yes there is heating if needed!

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but are welcomed by the crew!

• What language is spoken on board?

  English.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from the modern tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan if needed.

• Can I charge my phone or camera?

  Yes. We run generators every day in the morning and evening, which run the 240 volt system of normal 3 pin sockets.

• What is the currency on board?

  GBP - Pounds Sterling.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes.

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Bessie Ellen is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up the boats step ladder over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are waterproofs available?

  No. Please bring your own. There are a few oilskins spare for emergencies only.

• Do I need sailing experience?

  Not at all. We give everyone who joins us on board the choice to do as much or as little as they like, whether the know how to or not.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  No.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are worried to take some medication 24 hours before travelling.

• Is there an age limit?

  No, but we advise over 16's for scheduled voyages as there is an open saloon sleeping arrangement. There is no limit for private charter.

Getting There

Mallaig, Scotland

PARKING

Mallaig offers limited extended-stay parking in a car park to the left of the Train Station as you drive into Mallaig. Alternatively, try another long-stay spot at 24 East Bay, Mallaig.

BY RAIL

You can travel by rail overnight on the Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston to Fort William. Once in Fort William, you can take The Jacobite Steam Train or the electric train directly to Mallaig. Mallaig station is only a 5-10 minute walk to the harbour pontoons.

BY AIR:

Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport are best placed for access to Mallaig. From either of them, take a train onto For William and then onto Mallaig, which takes approximately 2-3 hours. There are good links direct from the airport to the train and bus terminals for onward travel to Fort William.

STAY IN MALLAIG:

There are plenty of places to stay in Mallaig. Try Chlachain Inn, Seaview Guesthouse or West Highland Hotel.
