A day to day guide

D A Y  1

Start today by a friendly welcome to Katharina, meet the crew and your fellow passengers as you settle into your seaborne home for the next two weeks.

Setting sail as soon as we can, the first stop will be the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre, roughly a one-hour cruise to the south. We will go ashore by tender for a guided tour to learn about their conservation efforts whilst meeting some of the wildlife that reside here including monkeys, hornbills, cockatoos, and sun bears.

In the afternoon we will spend time relaxing on deck as we voyage on our journey south.

D A Y  2

In the morning we will wake up at Punten Island where after breakfast there is the chance for the first snorkel of the trip over a beautiful reef with a wide variety of fish, corals and marine creatures.

In the afternoon we will snorkel again off the uninhabited island of Ratatotok, home to some great coral reefs. Later on, we will set a southerly course for an overnight trip to our next destination.

D A Y  3

Today we visit a local village to meet with the local people to see how they live. We will visit the school and take a tour through the clove plantations that support the local economy.

Back on the boat, we will make a five-hour cruise to the small seaside town of Botuborani, where an absolute highlight might await – the chance to swim with whale sharks! Following this experience, we will set off south towards the Togean Islands

D A Y  4

Today is a day for incredible wildlife experiences both in the water and the air, with birds, fish and invertebrates as the main features.

Enjoy a fantastic snorkel session on the reefs near the island of Malenge before taking our snorkels and masks to experience a rare opportunity – the chance to swim with stingless jellyfish in nearby Lake Mariona, one of only 20 lakes in the world that are home to these amazing creatures.

We then explore a local village to meet the community before embarking on a late afternoon forest walk in the hope of spotting the flocks of hornbills as they come flying in to roost in the trees.

D A Y  5

Today we will find ourselves off the extreme southern tip of Halmahera Island, where we will spend much of the day snorkelling and visiting a local Bajau sea gypsy village, learning about their unique way of life as they live in harmony with the water.

Step ashore to Kabalutan Village, where a population of about 2500 Bajau call home, and be welcomed into their world to meet and talk with them about their lives.

In the afternoon we will snorkel and swim on some pristine coral reefs before moving on further into the park for a truly unique wildlife encounter the following morning. 

D A Y  7 

A trio of unique experiences await us today involving culture, conservation and wildlife.

Begin by visiting the bustling Indonesian island port town of Bangai, a place filled with activity and commerce. Wander the local market, explore the neighbourhoods, the sultan’s palace and the maleo bird egg ‘museum’ – plus there’s no need for walking as a fleet of brightly-coloured motor rickshaws will be on the dock awaiting our arrival.

Take a hands on visit to LINI, an NGO doing essential work with coral restoration on the surrounding reefs. They are also working with local fishermen in finding sustainable solutions for supplying fish for overseas markets and the live aquarium fishing trade.

The last of the day’s highlights will be a snorkel on a local reef where we will see the most elegant, but very threatened, Banggai Cardinal Fish – a darling of saltwater aquarium lovers worldwide.

D A Y  8

We will pay a visit to another Bajau ‘sea gypsy’ community awaits us today, as we get to once again meet and experience one of Southeast Asia’s famous nomadic cultures.

From here its off for a snorkel session on one of the local reefs before venturing south to the wonderful Wakatobi National Park.

We will also have the rare privilege to swim in a small marine lake filled with stingless jellyfish, the exotically named Danau Piasu Botangan, one of only 20 lakes of its kind in the world.

D A Y  9

Day one of two in the Wakatobi National Park offers outstanding underwater beauty. A remote, hard to reach archipelago, this National Park is packed with fascinating culture and is renowned for being one of Indonesia’s best national parks.

As well as snorkelling in the morning and afternoon, you will enjoy a personalised tour of the island of Wangi Wangi. This includes a trip to a seaweed farm, meeting with a traditional weaving community and discovering the ruins of a centuries’ old Dutch fort, a relic of the ancient Spice Trade.

More fascinating culture and snorkelling awaits us today as we visit a famous local blacksmith before experiencing a ‘drift snorkel’ on the Wakatobi Resort’s magnificent house reef.

We start the day with a snorkelling session before cruising during lunch to nearby Binongko Island. It is here  that the local craftsmen use hand-operated bellows on the furnace in the blacksmith shop to produce machetes and knives which are highly sought-after right across Indonesia.

Wake up today to a sky filled with Brown- and Red-Footed Boobies and Lesser Frigate birds, many of which will be circling the boat and trying to land on the stays and masts!

Just off the island of Kakabia, an uninhabited sea mount in the middle of the Flores Sea, the birds are drawn here thanks to the rich in upwelling nutrients which have created a perfect habitat for fishing and raising their young.

We will spend the day here snorkelling and exploring with the aim to go ashore (tide depending) for an afternoon of swimming, kayaking, paddling and beach fun.

D A Y  1 2

We spend our twelfth day relaxing on the paradise that is Tinabo Island. While away swimming, snorkelling , paddle-boarding, kayaking, birdwatching and exploring.

In the evening, the crew will set up a beach BBQ for an evening party on the sand under a tropical night sky filled with stars.

D A Y  1 3

Today is a rare chance to walk amongst the hulls and hulks of a huge unlaunched flotilla of pinisi ships as they are being built on a remote island archipelago. Meet the knowledgeable shipwrights and discover their age-old traditions of shipbuilding that have been honed for centuries in this forgotten corner of the world, using basic plans, wood and a collection of simple tools and techniques.

Bonerate is rarely visited by tourists outside of SeaTrek, and seeing this open-air boatyard is an experience to be savoured. As we walk through the village and along the beaches and meet the locals, you will gain a new appreciation for island life and for the kind of boat you have been cruising with for the past twelve days.

D A Y  1 4

Giants will loom large in your day today: Komodo dragons, flying foxes and manta rays, three of the largest and most impressive animals not just in Indonesia but on the planet. 

Rising early in the volcanic Komodo National Park, take a private ranger-led walk around the island of Rinca to see the impressive Komodo dragons and their preferred prey – monkeys, deer, pigs and buffaloes.

After lunch back on board we will go in search of manta rays as they glide by as they feed in the current at their local cleaning stations.

– This evening, as the sun starts to set, we will gather on the deck and witness to a most spectacular event as thousands of flying foxes leave their mangrove forest homes en masse on their nightly fruit-foraging missions.

D A Y  1 5

Head ashore in the early morning on Komodo Island for another walk through the savanna and forests of Komodo island in search of dragons and other wildlife. We will then set course northwards in search of manta rays as these angels of the deep haunt a popular cleaning station. This moving experience will be followed by a snorkel with sea turtles.

Finish the day by climbing the viewing point on Gili Lawa Darat Island, which offers magnificent sunset views across Komodo National Park

D A Y  1 6

Your final day will be one of snorkelling and culture. After an optional morning swim and snorkel, join our private tour to a local village high up on a mountain plateau where we will be welcomed in by the elders and offered betel nut and arak, a potent local alcoholic brew.

Witness the traditional ‘caci’ whip dance, and the ‘bamboo’ dance, performed by the villagers for generations then sit for a final Indonesian lunch on the boat. 

We will then say a fond farewell to our crew, who have looked after us so well for the past two weeks, and transfer to Komodo airport for our flight back to Bali and our onward journey.

Please note that this is a guide as to what to expect from your sailing holiday in Indonesia. With the ever changing wind and tides, flexibility is key. Our mission is to provide the best experience possible for our guests given the current conditions and when unexpected opportunities for adventure may present themselves along our cruise routes.

Sometimes weather conditions, tides or other local factors dictate that we need to vary from the published route, and at times there are special opportunities to explore and discover new locations, events and activities. These explorations will always be a definite enhancement to the published itinerary and will be undertaken after discussion and agreement among guests. Ultimately, the boat captains and your tour leader will make decisions to maximise trip safety and your overall enjoyment, so please come prepared to be flexible!

Built in 1995 on the Indonesian portion on the island of Borneo, Katharina was originally planned for use a commercial freighter but caught the eye of her current owner with her elegant sailing lines and sleek hull shape.

They saw her transformation into a charter vessel as an exercise to conserve her Indonesian authenticity and in 2014, employed local craftsmen to complete a beautiful interior refit. Working alongside her sister ship Ombak Putih, (larger but equally as beautiful!), they are both fine examples of some of the few original boats that still sail these waters.

Now led by Captain Ferdi, Katharina takes guests on skippered sailing holidays to explore the cultural heritage, natural wonders and wildlife of the Indonesian islands.

BELOW DECKS

The top deck is a raised sun-lounging area sitting on the roof of the saloon and bar, giving guests secluded relaxation and stunning views. On the main deck, Katharina is rigged traditionally to make best use of the wind as the weather permits. A generous and comfortable saloon and bar sit to the stern of the boat while a large dining table sits under a canopy at the bows, perfect for alfresco dining under the stars.

Below decks, her interior refit has been to a high standard with spacious cabins and campion-ways.  Hand-crafted beds using local timber and locally made soft furnishings give the boat an authentic Indonesian feel. There are six private ensuite cabins for guests in a combination of double beds, twin bunks and three berth cabins.

The galley sits to the stern and is really where this boat comes to life. With 12 crew on hand, you won’t have to a lift a finger with freshly-prepared meals showcasing the very best of Indonesian cuisine and hospitality.

Life on-board Katharina is one of traditional Indonesian culture, from the welcoming local crew to the fresh local delicacies, fascinating endemic species and breath-taking Indonesian landscapes. The local people are at the heart of everything that Katharina does. From employing local people to sail her to the traditional craftsmen that built her, the networks and connections that have been nurtured by the crew are heart-warming. Visit remote villages where you’re greeted by running children, laughing and joking, sharing their local crafts. Dance around the fire, play music, exchange gifts and wonder their fascinating corner of paradise.

Sleeping and Relaxation

With six private, air-conditioned en-suite cabins full of traditional Indonesian charm, spacious communal area, alfresco dining areas and sun-lounge deck, Katharina offers plenty of seclusion and relaxation. There are kayaks, snorkel gear and SUP’s for guests to use and the crew can arrange extra activities ashore from kite-surfing to cookery classes.

There are a total of 12 crew on Katharina so you really won’t have to lift a finger. From home-made cocktails, freshly prepared Indonesian cuisine, there is even a host to take care of any extra excursion planning.

Kit list

Packing for your cruise is easy; you don’t have to glam up as everyone tends to dress casually, so choose clothes that are comfortable for walking/trekking and suitable for wearing on the boat. Please bring your items in a soft bag or rucksack. 

We recommend a travelling light principal with lots of lightweight, easy drying layers. Below is a list of recommended items, these are not mandatory and those that have visited South East Asia before may have their own preferences.

CLOTHING

• Cool cottons – t-shirts, shorts, sundresses
• Lightweight waterproof jacket – despite cruising in the dry season, rain is always a possibility
• Lightweight fleece – useful for pre-dawn treks, a cool wind on deck and for your flight
• Clothes that cover you modestly (at least over shoulders and past the knee) for visiting Muslim areas of the country
• At least one smart/casual outfit for sunset cocktails and evening meals on the boat
• Swimwear (at least 2); a rash vest or spring wetsuit will protect you from the sun, abrasions and stings 
• Sun shirts, beach covers ups/kaftans and sarongs that dry easily
• Wide brimmed sunhat or cap

FOOTWEAR

• Waterproof sandals or reef shoes
• Flip flops – easy to remove at the beach and light to carry
• Comfortable trainers, trekking sandals, sturdy walking or hiking shoes

ACCESSORIES

• Reef safe SPF for skin and hair and an aloe-based, alcohol free after-sun lotion
• Sunglasses: strap advised for activities
• Lightweight telescopic walking/hiking pole
• Day backpack – essential on hikes to carry your own water, camera, binoculars and rain jacket
• Waterproof wet/dry bag – for electronics and precious belongings
• Moisturiser, leave-in conditioner in addition to your regular favourite toiletries
• Headscarf/band and hair ties/grips – to keep hair out of your face whilst underway and to prevent stray hairs finding their way into your mask whilst snorkelling/diving and water seeping in 
• Snorkelling equipment is provided, but if you are already a keen snorkeller you may wish to take your own. If you’re new to snorkelling, you might want to consider purchasing a full-face snorkel mask as it’s easier for beginners
• Photography/videography gear and/or binoculars – take plenty of memory cards as these cannot be purchased in remote locations
• Seasickness tablets are provided onboard, but you may wish to pack your own preferred brand. If you are worried about possible seasickness, we advise you to start taking any medication 12 hours before departure. Ginger biscuits, tea and crystallised ginger are also good stomach settlers that you may wish to pack
• You’ll find reference books and paperback novels on board. However, books of your choice or an e-reader will come in handy for down hours
• There is a sound system on board, but you can bring your own music as well if you wish/portable speaker/earphones so you can listen to your own music in a private corner of the boat
• There is a comprehensive wilderness first aid kit on board but remember to bring any personal medications you may need

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Essential items should be packed in your carry-on luggage. Medications, corrective lenses, spare underwear, cameras and documents should not be checked in case your bag does not arrive with you. Never place valuables in checked luggage.

• It is mandatory that all guests must have a comprehensive policy that covers medical with an emergency evacuation policy (Medivac), and proof of this must be shown.

We also strongly urge our guests to purchase a comprehensive insurance policy that covers trip cancellation and interruption insurance 

• As you are travelling to remote locations, you could be as long as 2 days away from a clinic (and it really only might be a clinic and not a hospital) and a day away from an airfield to be lifted
• There is a defibrillator onboard, a large medical kit and all crew are first aid trained
• Please ensure that all necessary travel documents are valid, effective and in your possession. Passports are required for all participants and MUST be valid for at least SIX MONTHS after your date of return by Indonesian law
• Most foreign nationals to Indonesia can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival, but citizens of a small number of countries do not enjoy this privilege and have to apply for visa in the country of origin or elsewhere outside of Indonesia prior to arrival

• We recommend that all our passengers double-check on the requirements as they are in force at the time of their arrival. Please assume full responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

FAQ

• Are all meals included?

  Yes - all meals are included in the price (Breakfast, lunch, dinner, hot drinks)

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Vegetarian, halal, kosher, children’s fare, low fat dishes, allergies, etc. However, we must be notified in advance of any special needs so we can make arrangements.

• Are there any added extra's?

  No, unless you go ashore. Excursions are not included.

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  (All cabins are ensuites) 2 x double cabins, 2 x triple cabins (one double bed & one upper single bunk), 2 x twin bunk cabins.

• Is there a porthole in my cabin?

  Yes.

• How many toilet/showers does she have?

  There are six ensuites with each cabin.

• Are bedding and towels included?

  All bedding and shower towels are included. Please bring your own swimming towels.

• Is there a hairdryer on board?

  No, please do not bring one. The sea breeze makes a great natural alternative!

• Will I be able to wash my clothes?

  Yes, on average you can wash two pieces a day if/as required.

• Is there air conditioning onboard?

  Yes.

• Do I need to tip the crew?

  Tips are not mandatory but very much appreciated.

• What language is spoken onboard?

  English is the common deck language but there will be international guests and crew.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! It's time to disconnect from tech and reconnect with nature! When within shore range, you should be able to reach 4/5G. Please make sure you have international roaming set up on your data plan.

• Can I charge my phone/Camera?

  Yes - there are plenty of USB sockets available.

• What is the currency on board?

  IDR Indonesian Rupiah.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes

• How do I get on and off the boat?

  Katharina is often at anchor so you'll need to be comfortable climbing in and out of the tender dinghy and climbing up and over the gunwale - there will always be a crew member to steady.

• Are Waterproofs provided?

  No

• Do I need sailing experience?

  No, absolutely not! Just a need for adventure.

• Does the boat have any water toys?

  Yes, she has kayaks, SUP, snorkelling equipment, fishing gear and 2 tender boats.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are at all worried to take some medication 24 hours before departure. Ginger tea and biscuits also help with sea sickness.

• Is there an age limit?

  Min age is three years.
