D A Y  1

Meet your boat host and explore Ternate historical highlights before boarding your floating home. Get to know your fellow guests and crew over lunch as the crew set sail on the short journey to Halmahera Island’s Dojinga Village, a pivotal place in scientific history where the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace first came up with the theory of evolution by Natural Selection.

Later in the afternoon, take your first swim and snorkel in a magnificent coral reef before the boat heads south towards the volcanic mountain peaks of northern Moluccas.

D A Y 2

Wake early and head ashore as guests begin a rainforest trek to a stunning waterfall in central Halmahera. Wander through towering coconut tree plantations as you explore a traditional village and experience the locals hospitality by the beach.

Head back across the island towards Ombak Putih for lunch as the crew sail us to the invisible equator line – a great spot for ocean swimming before heading to the island of Bacan.

D A Y 3

Set foot on the island of Bacan as guest begin the search for some very special and unique wildlife species, bird spotting and quirky mammals. Explore deep in to the rainforest and follow the rivers of the Bacan island wehre Wallace first saw what he has since described as the most beautiful butterfly in the world – the Golden Birdwing. Our trek here will also see other species that could include the Cuscus, the black-crested macaque and perhaps some hornbills.

After lunch, spend the afternoon relaxing in this tropical paradise. Swim and snorkel the nearby coral reefs and wander barefoot ashore.

D A Y 4

Indulge yourself in Indonesian culture and spice today as we explore the white sand island of Obi Latu filled with clove and nutmeg plantations. The island of Obi Latu is covered in steep hillsides lined with clove and nutmeg forests reaching back to the rich days of the spice trade where many European countries vied for control over the East Indies. While the spice trade here may not be as it once was, the local growers here still make a good living on this remote island in the Banda Sea. Explore ashore and walk the local villages, plantations and fruit trees where the spices dry in the sun ready for market.

D A Y 5

Discover the remote and breath-taking Sulu archipelago as guests spend the day relaxing, snorkelling and taking in the culture and history in the middle of the Banda Sea.

Explore remote beaches and reefs off the Mangoli Islands that are teeming with tropical fish and marine life. Make use of the on-board kayaks and paddle boards as guests explore the shores and relax on white-sand beaches.

Visit the 17th century Dutch fort ruins which once protected the local spice trade and spend the afternoon exploring a local village market.

D A Y 6

The middle of our Indonesian adventure sees a highlight in the offering of Indonesian cultural experiences as guest head for Taliabu island.

Watch in wonder as the local warriors perform traditional dance rituals known as the “Cakalale” as guests dance with the air filled full of Indonesian music. Discover the islands magic and charm as you meet the locals and explore this remote isle on foot before spending the afternoon snorkelling beautiful coral reefs.

In the evening the crew will prepare a beach BBQ and bonfire on a deserted island and they regale guests with traditional Indonesian folk songs and sea shanties.

D A Y 7

The unsurpassed beauty of the Bokan Islands makes for a good day of marine exploration. Snorkel, swim, paddle and kayak around the glorious reefs, beaches and islands, home to many caves and top notch snorkelling spots. Guests will also be taken to a small salt water lake sunken in a volcanic crater home to the stingless jellyfish. This eco-system is only one of 20 found across the world and has been exotically named – Danau Piasu Botangan.

D A Y 8

Today will be split into three unique experiences of culture, conservation and wildlife. Visit the bustling port city of Bangai where guests can wander ashore, exploring local markets and neighbourhoods, the sultan’s palace, the maleo bird egg museum while travelling on brightly coloured rickshaws.

The conservation visit will see guests visit LINI – an NGO doing great work with coral restoration in the surrounding reefs. Meet local fisherman finding sustainable solutions to the demanding overseas fish markets and the live aquarium fishing trade.
To end the day, guests can snorkel a local reef to see the most elegant, but very threatened Banggai Cardinal fish – a gem of saltwater aquarium lovers worldwide.

D A Y 9

After a morning snorkel, Ombak Putih will set her sails north toward the islands of Sulawesi and Buton where the endemic Maleo bird lives. This flightless bird is a unique and strange species, living in pairs along the coast. Guests are invited to the conservation project on the island where you can watch their sandy nesting sights from a camouflaged hide.

Spend the afternoon exploring the Togean Islands National Park as Ombak Putih island hops her way through snorkelling spots and wonderful wildlife.

D A Y 1 0

Today sees a village visit to the famous Bajao “Sea Gypsies” of Southeast Asia, where nomadic sea-faring tribes live in wooden huts on stilts above the turquoise waters. The Kabalutan village is where the Bajou people call home and they welcome guests to meet with them and tour the village. Spend the afternoon relaxing on board or enjoying snorkelling, kayaking and paddle-boarding on the water.

D A Y 1 1

A day of wildlife experiences awaits both from the water and in the air with marine life and birds putting on a jolly good show.

Snorkel lush coral reefs near the island of Malenge before exploring the stingless jellyfish of Lake Mariona. – the second jellyfish lake on our route! Visit a local village, meet the people and enjoy. Alate afternoon walk into the forest to witness one of the most amazing nature shows that Indonesia has offer. The flocks of hornbills flying to roost in the trees here are a unique adventure organised especially by Ombak Putih and her crew!

D A Y 1 2

Waking up in the National Marine Park, guests can snorkel after breakfast before the long crossing back towards Sulawesi mainland. Relax as you watch the Indonesian landscape pass by from the deck of the ship.

In the afternoon, guests can take part in a traditional Indonesian cooking class on-board or if you prefer, just sunbathe, read and relax onboard! Finish the day with sunset cocktails and specially prepared dinner as you watch the crews band form for music and entertainment!

D A Y 1 3

Enjoy a cultural exchange with a village visit on the north of Sulawesi islands. Meet the local people are wander the nearby forest watching out for bird species along the way. Snorkel the local reef before the boat heads further north for final beach bonfire and BBQ as guests enjoy their final evening under the stars.

D A Y 1 4

Anchor just off the coast near the Tasikoki Rescue Centre where guests can enjoy a short tour of the facilities and conservation programmes. There is also the chance to see Orangutans, cockatoos, sun bears and monkeys.

Enjoy a final snorkel and swim before a short sail to Bitung Harbour where guests bid farewell and the crew take guests for onward travel in Manado City for onward flights or travel.

Ombak Putih is a traditional Indonesian pinisi sailing vessel built in 1995 on the island of Borneo. Part of a centuries-old maritime tradition of hand-crafted boat-building now classified as UNESCO cultural heritage.

Built by local Indonesian craftsmen using traditional hand tools and Indonesian hard-woods, Ombak Putih is full of cultural knowledge passed down from father to son over centuries. Working alongside her sister ship Katharina, (smaller but equally as beautiful!), they are both fine examples of some of the few original boats that still sail these waters.

Now led by Captain Jurfi, Ombak Putih takes guests on skippered sailing holidays to explore the cultural heritage, natural wonders and wildlife of the Indonesian islands.

Above decks, Ombak Putih has over 400sqm of communal space divided over her two main deck areas. A large saloon sits mid-ships at deck level with 360degree views with a large-covered canopy area to the bows for alfresco dining and daytime relaxation. A top deck sits above the saloon giving guests a secluded relaxation and sun-bathing area, as well as stunning views across the archipelago.

The galley sits to the stern and is really where this boat comes to life. With 14 crew on hand, you won’t have to a lift a finger with freshly-prepared meals showcasing the very best of Indonesian cuisine and hospitality.

Below decks, her interior refit has been to a high standard with spacious cabins and campion-ways.  Hand-crafted beds using local timber and locally made soft furnishings give the boat an authentic Indonesian feel. There are 12 private ensuite cabins for guests in a combination of double beds, twin bunks and three berth cabins.

Life on-board Ombak Putih is one of traditional Indonesian culture, from the welcoming local crew to the fresh local delicacies, fascinating endemic species and breath-taking Indonesian landscapes. The local people are at the heart of everything that Ombak Putih does. From employing local people to sail her to the traditional craftsmen that built her, the networks and connections that have been nurtured by the crew are heart-warming. Visit remote villages where you’re greeted by running children, laughing and joking, sharing their local crafts. Dance around the fire, play music, exchange gifts and wonder their fascinating corner of paradise.

Sleeping and Relaxation

With six private, air-conditioned en-suite cabins full of traditional Indonesian charm, spacious communal area, alfresco dining areas and sun-lounge deck, Ombak Putih offers plenty of seclusion and relaxation. There are kayaks, snorkel gear and SUP’s for guests to use and the crew can arrange extra activities ashore from kite-surfing to cookery classes.

There are a total of 14 crew on Ombak Putih so you really won’t have to lift a finger. From home-made cocktails, freshly prepared Indonesian cuisine, there is even a host to take care of any extra excursion planning.

All food is made on board and local, fresh produce is top of the shopping list. We try to rendezvous with the local fishermen to get local seafood and fresh produce. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served buffet style.

Travel insurance notes

As this is an active adventure holiday, we advise that everyone has the appropriate personal accident travel insurance whilst onboard in addition to standard travel insurance which would cover you in the time between making your booking and departing for your adventure. These policies can sometimes be combined so please check with your travel insurance provider.

• Are all meals included?

  Yes - all meals are included in the price (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Hot Drinks)

• Are there any added extra's?

  No, unless you go ashore. Excursions are not included.

• Can you cater for dietary needs?

  Vegetarian, halal, kosher, children’s fare, low fat dishes, allergies, etc. However, we must be notified in advance of any special needs so we can make arrangements.

• What language is spoken onboard?

  English

• What are the sleeping arrangements?

  (All cabins are ensuites) 6 x double cabins, 2 x triple cabins (one double bed & one upper single bunk), 4 x twin bunk cabins.

• How many toilet/showers does she have?

  There are 12 ensuites with each cabin.

• Is there WIFI?

  No! Time to disconnect from the modern conforms and reconnect with nature!

• Can I charge my phone/Camera?

  Yes - there are plenty of USB sockets available.

• Are there life jackets provided?

  Yes

• Are Waterproofs provided?

  No

• Do I need sailing experience?

  No, absolutely not! Just a need for adventure.

• Will I be sea sick?

  Everyone reacts differently but we recommend if you are at all worried to take some medication 24 hours before departure. Ginger tea and biscuits also help with sea sickness.

• Is bedding included?

  All bedding and shower towels are included. Please bring your own swimming towels.
