A Sailing Holiday in the BVI: Trade Winds & Island Life
British Virgin Islands, Caribbean — Tortola → Virgin Gorda → Jost van Dyke → Anegada
The British Virgin Islands are widely regarded as one of the world’s great sailing destinations, and it’s easy to understand why. This stunning chain of islands, steeped in pirate history, stretches across the northeastern Caribbean, offering consistent trade-wind sailing, sheltered anchorages and some of the most beautiful water in the world. With island names like Fallen Jerusalem, Dead Chest and Salt Island, the BVI conjures up tales of treasure maps and golden chests — while delivering world-class sailing conditions in a truly breathtaking setting.
Your sailing holiday in the BVI aboard Kairos is built around the rhythm of the islands rather than a fixed schedule. Wind and weather shape where you go, and that’s part of the appeal. The crew knows these waters well, and their aim is to find the quieter anchorages, the less-visited bays and the kind of spots that don’t appear in guidebooks. Expect a relaxed balance of time under sail, time at anchor and time ashore — enough to feel the freedom of the sea, without ever feeling rushed.
Exploring the British Virgin Islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda & Beyond
Kairos will tailor the route to the wind, but the voyage typically takes in a handful of the BVI’s most rewarding islands and some of the Caribbean’s most memorable spots along the way:
- Tortola — the largest island and the practical hub of the BVI, but Kairos steers away from the busy charter marinas to find its quieter coves, bougainvillaea-lined lanes and remote anchorages worth dropping the hook for
- Virgin Gorda — famous for the Baths, where vast granite boulders tumble into the sea, forming tidal pools and hidden passages to explore; beyond the Baths, beaches like Devil’s Bay and Mahoe Bay offer calm, uncrowded swimming and snorkelling
- The Indians — one of the BVI’s finest snorkelling spots, a cluster of rocky pinnacles rising from the sea with vibrant coral and marine life just below the surface; a highlight for anyone who goes in the water
- Copper Island — a quiet, largely unspoiled island with sheltered anchorages and clear waters, perfect for snorkelling and a peaceful afternoon away from the busier sailing routes
- Peter Island — one of the more secluded spots in the BVI, with soft sandy beaches and calm, sheltered bays that make it a natural place to drop anchor for the afternoon
- Jost van Dyke — a small, unhurried island with big appeal; White Bay is home to the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar — so named because swimmers wade ashore to reach it — while Foxy’s on Great Harbour has been a sailors’ institution for decades, and the island’s coral reefs are well worth exploring with a snorkel
- Anegada (weather permitting) — flat, quiet and unlike anywhere else in the BVI; a coral island famed for its lobster, its salt ponds and the remarkable clarity of its surrounding waters
Each island brings something different to the voyage — and the nature of sailing means you can reach these places without the expense of taxis or ferries.
Caribbean Sailing at Its Best: Trade Winds, Anchorages & Island Culture
The BVI’s trade winds make for some of the most enjoyable sailing in the Caribbean — reliable, warm and consistent, they fill the sails and keep the yacht moving with a gentle, purposeful rhythm. Between passages, the real magic of this Caribbean sailing holiday unfolds at anchor. Snorkel over coral gardens alive with tropical fish, sea turtles and rays; walk bougainvillaea-lined lanes to a local restaurant; or simply drift in the warm turquoise water with a cold drink in hand.
- Crystal-clear water ideal for snorkelling and swimming straight from the boat
- Charming villages and harbourside restaurants serving fresh local cuisine
- Scenic hillside walks with panoramic views across the island chain
- Remote, uncrowded anchorages far from the tourist trail
- Trade-wind sailing conditions ideal for both beginners and experienced sailors
This voyage strikes the right balance between time at sea and time ashore — enough sailing to feel the freedom of the open water, and enough island time to truly experience the culture and beauty of the BVI.

Need help with flights?
Our sailing holidays on board Kairós are ones of style and comfort while exploring sunshine destinations and unforgettable locations.
Sailing with Kairós is certainly one of comfort and relaxation. Think of a boutique, intimate, classic sailing experience where nothing is too much trouble. Her dedicated and professional crew is highly trained and well-versed in smooth sailing operations.
Getting Involved
She has an impressive sail area, and her rig is electronically operated with retractable sails, so there is no need to “learn the ropes” here! Her crew are always on hand and happy to discuss the sailing operations with guests.
Although there is less focus on the “hands-on” sailing of Kairós, the Captain and crew offer interesting sailing talks and information briefs for guests during the voyage. Learn about the boat’s history and sailing terms, and even take a tour of the engine room if you fancy! Understanding these elegant classic vessels and feeling their power with the wind is truly an unforgettable experience.
Sleeping and Relaxation
Every space on Kairós is considered with the guests at the forefront of all design. From the spacious saloon, private ensuite cabins clad in tropical wood, to the sweeping open decks with plenty of sun lounging spaces.
The generously proportioned cabins all have plenty of luggage storage, full-size domestic showers and air conditioning units. Kairós has six double cabins and one smaller double ensuite (great for younger couples or solo travellers). Kairós cabins are named after the owners’ love of classic boats, of course; each cabin is given a different classic boat name (Eleanora is his favourite!). This matches the allocated swim towel set for guests, so if you leave it drying on deck, a crew member will deliver it back to your cabin when it’s dry.
Daily cabin service is also part of the offering. A crew member will make your bed and freshen your bathroom every day. If you want a towel change or a complete cabin clean, just leave the relevant sign on the cabin door!
Cabins explained…
Deluxe Cabin: This cabin features one large double bed and an ensuite with a walk-in shower.
Small Double Cabin: This cabin has one small double bed, an ensuite toilet, and a shower wet room. It is suitable for solo travellers or two young guests.
Dining Aboard
Although the day is punctuated by meal times, you certainly don’t feel like you’re running on a schedule. The relaxed nature of both the boat and the crew gives a perfect balance.
Depending on the voyage location, the daily routine can vary and be flexible, according to the group’s wishes. Perhaps sit back and relax as the crew sets sail to another remote anchorage to enjoy a freshly cooked lunch and the onboard water toys! Or spend the morning swimming in a secluded bay or exploring an ancient port city before setting sail to a new location.
Start the day with a continental buffet-style breakfast, then a light 2-course lunch at noon, coffee, tea, and cake in the afternoon, before finishing the day with a freshly cooked dinner. For every voyage on Kairós, guests enjoy a meal ashore at their own expense to really immerse themselves in the local culture and cuisine. Guests tend to go off in their own groups, but sometimes, the crew can join in if guests are unsure of the best spots!
A typical Day
Generally, after breakfast, Kairós will spend a few hours sailing to a new destination where guests can either explore ashore or swim from the boat. Guests can go ashore usually every 1-2 days. On her longer passages and Ocean crossings, she will spend consecutive days at sea.
Water-toys
For those water lovers with a sense of adventure, Kairós has a multitude of water-sport activities and equipment available for guests on her standard voyages (not crossings/passages). Adult-size snorkelling equipment is available for guests to use free of charge.
Water skiing, wakeboarding and tube riding are all chargeable once on board. Kairós offers this at a moderate price and suggests an average of 10% of the voyage price to serve as a guide for consumption. The onboard currency is EUROS, and guests can open an onboard account that can be settled at the end of their voyage.

Kairós
Guest berths: 14 Rig: Bermuda Schooner
This beautiful schooner is the creation of Andreas Steidle-Sailer, a passionate sailor and visionary with a love of classic yachts. He realised that sailing on board beautiful classic yachts was often accessible only to the super-rich and wanted to create an opportunity for anyone to sail in luxury on a modern yacht with classic lines. He teamed up with Klaus Röder in 2007, who based his design on a classic yacht whilst staying true to modern-day schooners, built for performance sailing and guest comfort.
Kairós offers cabin charter berths for up to 14 guests. She has six private en-suite double cabins (all named after iconic classic yachts) with full walk-in shower cubicles, and one small double cabin with a wet-room ensuite. All her cabins have complete air conditioning, teak interior finishes, and full-size double beds. There’s a bar and navigation station in the midships, and below decks, she has a large saloon area with comfortable leather seating and dining.
Built with ultimate comfort in mind, the deck’s outline is teak and mahogany, with plenty of space to sunbathe, read a book and enjoy the views. All the sails are electronically retractable, so there is no need to “learn the ropes” here! An admiralty ladder provides the perfect place to jump off into the warm Mediterranean waters, swim, and climb back aboard easily. Kairós also offers her guests the option to use her paddle boards, snorkelling and water sports equipment!
